Intel CPU market share tops 80 per cent

Best showing since 2005
Tuesday, 15 September 2009, 09:00

INTEL HAS TAKEN over eighty per cent of the processor market for the first time in four years.

According to the latest data from analyst house iSuppli Intel now has 80.6 per cent of the processor market, up 1.5 per cent. It is Intel's best performance since 2005, when it stood at 82.4 per cent of the total market.

“Intel benefited as the global PC market took a first small step toward recovery in the second quarter, with global shipments rising by one percent from the first quarter,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst of compute platforms research for iSuppli.

“However, with PC shipments still down compared to a year earlier, Intel actually suffered a decline in microprocessor revenue compared to a year earlier, as did chief rival AMD.”

AMD's market share fell by 1.4 per cent to 11.5 per cent, with other manufacturers such as Via also losing share.

“AMD didn’t benefit from the small sequential rise in PC sales because its average microprocessor pricing was lower than that from the first quarter of 2009,” Wilkins said. µ

Almost...

I was hoping the figure would be 80.86%, but clearly Intel still have some work to do. :)

I've been doing my part

I've been putting together a lot AMD custom builds for our customers because I really like AMD and the Phenom II performs pretty well. Of course I always put together a build I think is best for the customer and anyone looking to do video/photo editing and the like get Core i7 builds.

I just wish AMD would get competitive again. I loved my Thunderbird Athlon 1.3Ghz, used that chip for 5 years! Currently running Intel but would love to switch if AMD could give me a compelling reason.

Intel amd

PC market has only gorwn by 1%, desktop PCs are down and so are the servers. The only segment which is growing is notebook computers - but again it could be misleading as the only category which continues to grow is NETBOOK (powered by Atom processor. For some strange reason AMD is absent from this category and hence the marketshare loss which will continue for some more time (atleast) . Why AMD continues to ignore this segment is the moot question

Hard To Beat AMD Price/Performance ratings....

AMD Semperon 140 AM3 & next 4 core Phenom II AM3 coming in Week @ $80 Clams are such powerful Machines, with AM3 only mains beginning to appear, that Only FOOL Pay Over $100 for Processor.

Those fools wishfully pay hundreds for audio, hundred for TV tuner, Hundred for Flash thumb & think Nothing of Raw Simplicity of such overpriced Crude.

GET AMD & GET GOING.

Int.grate Will Never Be Able to BEAT Those Units On Price, Performance being Above Most Users Needs, ever.
Personelly, think Liam Proven & Intel Are Shucks of Marketing Con Game.

Drashek still hasn't got a clue

I often read comments on the bottom of these articles and often "attempt" to read what Drashek has written (it's very hard since his English is quite poor). I am not English myself (French Canadian to be exact) but Dashek... you really do a dis service to AMD when you post.

As for the content of your post. You claim that a Sempron offers all of the performance that anyone would need. Tell me... have you tried editing 1080p HD content on a Sempron or hell even a Phenom II X4? It's so slow that by the time the files open up for editing... you've lost all creative interest.

There is a market for performance and this is the market Intel has filled up with the Socket 1366 variants of their Nehalem architecture. Intel also has the Mainstream segment covered with the Core i5 and soon the budget segment will be covered by the Core i3. Intel also has the server market covered with the Nehalem based Xeons. In every segment Intel offers the best Price/Performance (currently) except for the budget segment (as we await the arrival of the Core i3).

These statements are simple facts (devoid of any fanboi preference). Intel just has the superior processor architecture (just as AMD did with the K8 in the Intel Netburst/Prescott days).

AMD has taken note of this and will be concentrating on their graphics platform (AMD Vision marketing campaign). they can't really compete on price alone anyone (as their Phenom II X4s and Semprons just cost too much to manufacture for them to drop prices further).

So chill dude and stop with the Fud.
