SOUTH KOREAN conglomerate Samsung has launched an online mobile phone apps store in the UK, as our sister site V3 reported last month that it planned to do.
Samsung customers who own Omnia and Omnia HD mobile phones initially will have about 300 applications to choose from, including games and e-books. The company expects that the number of mobile applications available will grow to about 2,000 by year end.
To access the apps store, users need to install the download icon from the store website. They can pay for the applications they buy either through their mobile carrier subscription or via credit card.
Samsung also plans to add applications for its Omnia II, OmniaLITE and Omnia Pro smartphones by the end of the year. µ

Good for anyone not desireous of cancer in brains. Samsung has more models in .35 w/kg low end than most.
Blackberry runs near max 1.6 w/kg, as many other manufacturers, whom make mere one or few low watt & isn't easily found. Samsung thus is more concerned with you surviving cell phone than most.

Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen! All about the bandwagon!
This mobile-phone app store is becoming extremely fragmented. As with MP3 download services a few years ago, how long will it be before we start to see some closures?
Whilst Samsung certainly has a large installed base, is it really attractive enough the application authors that they will get 2000 apps? Notice this is qualified with 'and eBooks' in the press release. I expect it will be rather more of the latter than the former.
