Oracle updates Berkeley DB

Open sauce DBMS gets a boost
Monday, 14 September 2009, 15:35

ORACLE HAS UPGRADED its open source Oracle Berkeley DB and Oracle Berkeley DB XML with updates designed to make it easier for developers, ISVs, systems integrators and users to integrate and manage them.

Often used in 'edge' systems, Oracle's embedded Berkeley database software has fresh performance enhancements, and better reliability and availability with 'virtually no human administration' required, the company claims.

Benefits include better use of disk storage with a 30 per cent smaller footprint, more openness when it comes to accepting self-built or external applications, and improved failure handling for multithreaded applications. Locking and latching code has been improved, along with automatic partitioning designed to boost applications performance.

New software APIs have also been added to ease applications development, while other additions include a new DB_SQL utility and C++ Standard Template Library integration, plus C# and .NET support for Windows developers. µ
