The INQ's Snow Leopard poll results are in

Most of you still prefer Windows
Fri Sep 11 2009, 16:45

THE INQUIRER'S latest poll on reader plans, or not, to upgrade to Snow Leopard has uncovered some interesting statistics for us and some faintly reassuring news for Microsoft.

Poll respondents seemed to have few concerns about security issues with Snow Leopard and only a handful suggested that its bugs or issues would put them off a purchase. Meanwhile more of you opted to stick with Microsoft's Windows or Linux alternatives, despite associated baggage or problems.

Overall just around a fifth of the two thousand and some respondents were expecting to upgrade to Apple's newest OS release, while forty-three per cent of form clickers opted for the "No I'm waiting for Windows 7" option. It's probably fairly safe to say that they are existing Windows users who would never think of looking forward to an Apple OS upgrade.

Meanwhile twenty-four per cent of you preferred to get down and dirty with your systems upgrades, answering "No I prefer spending my time reconfiguring Linux", which is music to our ears.

Just nineteen percent of respondents felt that Apple's Snow Leopard upgrade was cheap enough to buy (we used the suggestion that it was as cheap as chips) and therefore represented great value for money. Which is an interesting point of view given the availability of free alternatives.

Five per cent of those polled might be current and grudging Apple users, or maybe just Microsoft fans, as they answered "No, it's full of bugs and insecure", while six per cent admitted that the voices in their heads were encouraging them to make the purchase.

From all of this we are tempted to conclude that about twenty-five per cent of our readers are Mac users. µ

Not a SL Fan

I love Mac but after upgrading what was a flawless computer with hopes of only improved performance (and perhaps Exchange/Cisco integration) - I am left wishing I'd left well-enough alone!

Here are a few issues I've encountered since upgrading a 1year old IMac from OS 10.5

Never, ever had to hard boot the Dual Core iMac before to get out of a crash!

Cisco VPN I used flawlessly until the upgrade now crashes itself and hangs the computer for minutes on end.

All network activity slows during .Mac sync ops.

The computer visibly slows during Backups.

Seems to be having trouble with previously installed, non-Apple software that used to work fine.

MySQL no longer works.

The biggest problems seem to be low-level threading. Looking at top when things are crashing leads me to believe there's some work to be done here.

I'm still and Apple fan but I strongly suggest some cold thought before upgrading a working computer. I'd only consider if you have a breaking need for Exchange or Cisco support - though even there I'm unsuccessful!

It seems Apple (and I guess the press too ) are glossing over some issues that require at the very least acknowledgement and hopefully a fix!

here we go again

"I am so glad to find out that the Inq has a conclusive poll of 2000 "and some odd" internet users says they will not upgrade to Snow Leopard. Clearing this .00012% of internet users indicates that Snow Leopard sucks."

Since this poll was purely based off of "Inquirer Users" then I don't see why you would mention ".00012% of internet users" as if that is relevant at all in any way.

If there was a poll on an Apple website which showed how many of them actually like using a Windows based OS over OSX then would you also be that narrow minded to dismiss the fact that it was just a poll of the users on just that particular website which so happened to be an Apple forum and not based off of the majority of OSX users of the internet since even if all the users on the Apple forums magically said they liked Windows over OSX, then it still wouldn't account for the 80%+ of consumers that use Windows around the world.

I'm pretty damn sure that the majority of people on every Apple forum is more in favor of OSX than Windows. So honestly, I would rather look at a poll conducted on the Inquirer than any Apple forum since any polls conducted on any such Apple forums are more than likely going to be biased just like the advertising propaganda shown on Apple.com.

Therefore, I see nothing wrong with this poll from the Inquirer even if there are a small tiny amount of users.

and the bollocks continues

amazing results after a year of Nick Farrell brainwashing the idiotic windows masses on the inquirer (well when I say "masses" I mean the plonkers still here daily reading this garbage).

Inquirer is the most bigoted, narrowminded and idiotic site on the net, no wonder all the good writers have left.

clearly scientific and conclusive

I am so glad to find out that the Inq has a conclusive poll of 2000 "and some odd" internet users says they will not upgrade to Snow Leopard. Clearing this .00012% of internet users indicates that Snow Leopard sucks.

I am just glad that The Inq has at least 2000 and some odd readers

Hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha.

The Inq guide to subliminal Ipod messages

Judging from the "Yes, the voice of Apple playing through my Ipod told me to" item, you NDA-unrestricted hacks at the Inq are in the know about the various brainwashing techniques used by Jobs' Mob. Ipod users better watch it, or they could wind up on the catwalk in NYC.

Kind of skewed

The poll is kind of skewed. I assume that any Mac user who has the hardware will upgrade to Snow Leopard, just as most people would install a service pack for Windows when it comes out. As for "upgrading" to it from another platform, that question should be rephrased to: "will you buy a new Mac?" since you can't "upgrade" to any variant of OS X without the Mac, or some PC hacks.

Mac=Linear

If you are a Mac user you only have one path, and that's down steve job's path. No customization or anything, you use a Mac, you are just that, PC's=Freedom.

If Mac grows it becomes evil

If Microsoft is evil than Apple even more so! Mac is overpriced and made by Apple control freaks who want to control not only software, but everything.

Spending time reconfiguring Linux?

You don't spend time reconfiguring Linux, honest.... Upgrades are painless and effectively automatic. Systems that work OK (which includes a lot of home entertainment kit these days) you just leave alone.

For the fanboyz... yes I use both Windows and OS-X. I use Linux for some everyday use and for unattended (embedded) systems where the unit's just left running.

Oh Okay

I upgraded to snow leopard and got no native 64 bit kernel on my macbook.

I also got my vodafone usb dongle to give me kernel panic.

I also got to install rosetta to run my scripts i wrote for network logins.

I also got menumeters and perian bust.

I think it was a good upgrade that wrecked my IFA show as an exhibtor!

...

I don't think it's likely that most Windows users would opt to switch to Leopard when that would most likely require a whole new PC to go with it. Even with all the flaws, it's easier (and cheaper) just to shove a Windows upgrade in your DVD drive.

Make that 26%

Out of the 100 people who read The Inq, I forgot to fill out the form. But I do use a Mac. And I did upgrade. So give the Apple camp another tick on the blackboard.

Cheers;)

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
