Microsoft launches an open sauce foundation

Codeplex is with us
Friday, 11 September 2009, 10:59

SOFTWARE PATENTS BULLY Microsoft has launched an 'open source' collaboration (*cough*).

Dubbed the CodePlex Foundation, it builds on the efforts of Microsoft's Codeplex software repository.

Vole watchers will be amused, no doubt, that it launched its open sauce initiative in the same week that it was trying to off-load a bundle of patents to the nearest patent troll in a bid to scupper Linux.

The foundation is initially being funded by Microsoft and will be led by Novell's Miguel de Icaza, who will join the new foundation's Board of Directors. Novell and the Vole are best pals when it comes to Microsoft's queer flavour of 'open source' and have agreed not to sue each other.

According to a Volish FAQ, the new foundation notes that Codeplex was started in 2006 as a project hosting site to meet the needs of commercial developers. The Foundation is related but it will be a separate effort.

The big idea is to bring open source and commercial software developers together in a place where they can collaborate. A cozy pub would have been a good enough place to do that, we would have thought.

The Foundation will be independent from the project hosting site, but Microsoft claims it will support that.

But what the Foundation seems to be trying to tackle is a way to get open sauce developers working on Microsoft related software projects.

While Linux and other GPL'd software applications have lots of developers who will work on them, the Vole is treated with suspicion and actively mocked by open sourcerers.

In a statement the Vole said it believes that commercial software companies and the developers that work for them under-participate in open source projects. µ

Make the serfs work harder, dammit!

Obviously, Microsoft management is not pleased with the lack of productivity of their in-house serfs, err, programmers, and the abysmally low quality of their work, so now they want to scam off the open source community?

Good luck with that, homeys.

Is it really a surprise to find that...

...when it comes to open source and Microsoft, its always involving Miguel de Icaza in some way?

Seriously, if he could, he would lick cream off every MS manager's butt to get hired by Microsoft.

This is the guy (back in 1997), who got interviewed by Microsoft. He couldn't get the job because he lacked the University degree (required for a visa to work in USA).

...I guess this is as close as he's gonna get.

As for Codeplex? This is MS's attempt to emulate Sourceforge.net

What MS wants, is to get open source developers writing on the Windows platform.

LAMP Attack

Everybody on the board of directors has to do with (ASP).NET, SilverLite, SQL, or IIS. This is an attack on LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) and Java. Microsoft currently has 23% market share, Apache has 47% (according to Netcraft).

Let's keep it that way!

Your arguments are contradictory

As always Microsoft is playing catch up with the rest of the industry when it comes to innovation. They finally realised that it’s the software licences and not their code (which is terrible) is source of income.

What I don’t understand is criticism of Microsoft wonting to start using open software model. This is exactly what most people complained about for years and finally that Microsoft is going in the right direction some people complain about this as well.
