Host a Windows 7 launch party

Uncle Ballmer wants YOU
Friday, 4 September 2009, 13:32

AS MICROSOFT builds up to its launch of Windows 7, the company is trying to recruit help from innocent consumers across the world to hold their own launch parties.

The recruitment drive is taking place at HouseParty.com, the online party coordinating service. If you live in the US, UK, Italy, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Spain, Mexico, Hong-Kong, India, Canada or Australia, you can point your web browser to Houseparty.com and sign up as a host.

So what's in it for you, apart from having the undead gratitude of the Vole? Well, apart from the hosting bit, most of the work will be up to Microsoft. It will supply the "party favours" and you supply your mates for an initiation, that is, have them come over and sit around a PC ooh-ing and ah-ing at the Windows 7 eye-candy, and uploading photos, videos and chatting with other party goers... all in the name of Windows ME II SP7.

Microsoft apparently will supply the necessary party favours - they're calling it the "Windows 7 Party Pack" - and HouseParty.com will help you organise things.

The Vole's Windows 7 party favours, we guess, will relate to the four party themes - PhotoPalooza, Media Mania, Setting Up With Ease (a real crowd-drawer that, shurely) and Family Friendly Fun.

To apply just login, choose a theme, choose a date from October 22 through 29, tell them a little bit about yourself and send it off.

True, it's a blatant scheme to get people over and brainwash them about the 'latest and greatest' (*cough*) Microsoft OS, but you do get a unique "Windows 7 Signature Edition" for your trouble.

We've even heard that if you're creative enough, Uncle Fester Ballmer will come a-knockin'.

In any event, in the spirit of Microsoft's infamous "Halloween memos", it seems Halloween comes a week early this year. µ

Ballmer is Psycho from hell

Without That Psycho I would have have never found Ubuntu. I would be happy to host a Ubuntu party and of course it would be FREE.

Rocker

If I am going to help be a promotion tool for Microsoft, for as much money that they charge for this software; the least they can do is provide me with a free copy of Win7!!

If you want me to promo your wares, and if my friends buy it...otherwise why would I bother!?!?!?

Who do they think they are?

I can understand there are Linux release parties as the software is free and the people willing to "spread the word" are plenty.

I can understand an Apple Release Party as the religious followers will kneel deep when it's holiness St Jobs calls for it.

But Mickeysoft has neither the cool nor the free and unless I get a free copy on such a Party I would neither organize nor join such a Party.

Will it get me a hefty discount on the OS?

If yes, sure I'll throw a party. lol!!

It's not 1995 anymore

Come one... house parties for the release of another version of an operating system everyone uses?

You'd have to have a serious social disorder or be a very strange nerd to do that in this day and age. Even a Linux or FireBadger party would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Unless they offer a huge discount and a bag of expensive goodies, in which case I'm with LoCatus (providing their smallprint allows a 'party' of one.)

what a terrible article

This article is just as terrible as the new format advertisements that hang out with me as I scroll down the page. INQ take notice - your site has gone way down hill and I am about to stop reading because your authors are just terrible and contribute an ever diminishing amount of value to society. I am just fine with the whole Vole thing - I like it - Microsoft is Vole, okay. Windows ME II SP7? Are you kidding me? This just breaks from the rest of the name drivel your hacks have come up with for Windows 7 and the worst part about it - I didn't even get a laugh out of the article. This is truly a waste of my time and I don't even know why I'm still typing this comment. ok, fixed that problem.

Forum Status

I am really disappointed in the Inquirer. There was a point when I could read very informative news on this web site about two years ago. Since then there has been this slow ooze of forum quality information. A very noticeable lack of fact checking, taking information out of context, blatant biased opinions to point of, dare I say, trolling. Indeed trolling. I have never seen such a phenomena of outright cage rattling just to draw in people since Sean Hannity, or just Fox News in general.

Congratulations Inquirer you have successfully trolled me. You drew me in with quality and then slowly took it away. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse you gave me a kick in the teeth with your new adds that leap out and take over the page, and just when I try to escape your adds leap out once again front and center and take focus away from my search bar.

I can’t sit here faking a smile with kicked in teeth any more. Not when things have been allowed to get this low, to the point where everything I read on this site is nothing more than troll post trying to kick up reactions from those less disciplined.

tldr;
You’re off my front page, you’ve been chased out of my favorites, and you have been locked away as a bad memory.

AdBlock Plus

I almost want to insult people who don't use the firefox plugin AdBlock Plus. It is highly effective. Browsing the web without it is intolerable. Also you peope should select a flash toggle button for your toolbar. Saves a lot of electricity in my netbook But yeah I agree that the Inq has gone down hill in the past couple years but I still find enough articles that give me a laugh to keep them in my bookmarks.

"Launch Party...Ohhh Boy!" No thanks.

The sad thing is, outside forums and boards similar to this one, I read an enormous amount of comments from people stating they will buy Win7 the day it's released. I was hoping peoples attitudes would be slightly different, more hesatent to throw $320 at M$ so shortly after being backed stabed with Vista... I had hoped this hesatation would drive the price down. Wishful thinking I suppose.
I'm not thrilled with Windows 7, but I WOULD like to upgrade from 10 year old XP... that said, I am not paying $300+ for Win7. I'll just wait till a reliable patch/crack/workaround is released. ;-)

Great way to lose friends...

What a wonderful little plan, hatched by Stevie B.:

1) You accept a bribe from Microsoft to tell their lies for them to a bunch of your friends, selling out your buddies for a few bucks.
2) Then some of your friends go home, pay MS's FULL, INFLATED PRICE for their lackluster OS (money that they could have spent on something useful, like groceries).
3) Shortly afterward these friends discover that they have been hacked by Internet malware, and that their ID's and bank account numbers have been stolen, that they cannot play some media due to DRM, etc.

What a great way to lose friends! I wonder if Stevie B. would still grease the palms of those who held "Windows/Linux comparison parties". They could even use OpenSuse (from Novell - surely MS could not argue with having a product of their "business partner" compared to Win7?).

Trouble is, I think many people would just go home and install OpenSuse for free (as it makes Win7 look pretty shabby and insecure indeed). The other trouble is, I personally wouldn't take a copy of Win7 if it was given to me. You can keep it, Stevie.

Penguin parties?

Yea, this makes one wonder why more people do not hold Ubuntu parties and the like.

I think the reason may go something like this:

- According to Microsoft, people only do things when motivated by advertising and/or money. So why would people do something just to help other people to learn about open source software that can save them money, keep them more secure, and allow them to control their own hardware? No, if the almighty dollar is not involved, no one should do anything for anyone else (except for the saintly Bill Gates, who is still apparently trying to atone for his many sins as ex-CEO of that company).

Actually, many people do like to do things for others and not be insulted by having small bribes given to them by billionaires to cheapen their actions.

Perhaps Mr. Ballmer is onto something here: just remove the money and Microsoft components of his idea, and yes, Linux Parties...no, PENGUIN PARTIES...could be a great way to socialize and help out others to see the free alternative to proprietary software. Bon idea!

I have to wonder

If Ubuntu in particular, and Linux in general, is so great, why is it that the only time we Windows users hear about it is in the comment section of an article about Windows ?
Oh yeah, because otherwise the penguinists would have no place to troll about it.

Windows 7 Cometh

Actually Windows 7 kicks much ass. I was ready to shoot down Vista Part 2, but I am actually very impressed with Windows 7. I have been using ultimate for over a month now.

Why penguin parties?

I wrote the above about a Ubuntu party Why? I started trying Linux about 10 years ago. It was a good OS but it was for geeks.I used windows but was never totally happy with it. I am also a certified Microsoft tech. It was and is shocking how easy it is for windows including windows 7 it is to install malware and virus. Its easy to get administration rights and windows still makes poor use of memory. Both Osx and Linux have a totally different way and its hard to gain administrative access. Please do your own research. I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 and am so impressed at how well it works and how much safer it is. For the first time in my mind it is ready for real use. I was totally disgusted with Vista.
If you like Vista thats great I dont. I feel like Microsoft owes anyone who didnt like Vista should be given a free copy of Windows 7. The truth is Ubuntu beats windows 7 hands down. Dont take my word for it try it yourself. I live in a small town and am kinda the local tech support. My neighbor who just bought a new Dell and wonders why Vista 64 is so slow. I used a second hard drive and installed Ubuntu. She loves it and cant believe its free.So why would I host a Ubuntu party? because its free and I would like to help all the thousand of people who helped to make Linux a great OS. And because these forums rarely mention Linux I talk about here because people do have an option. And its FREE and its faster and safer than windows. Try it yourself it only costs a blank dvd a little time to get used to something new.You can also run Linux from a usb flash drive or usb drive. try that with windows. And there are a lot of high quality games, free I was really surprised at that

Thanks Uncle Ballmer

Sure! I will be happy to do it if,

1) This free "Windows 7 Signature Edition" is a "Windows 7 Ultimate Plus" version,
2) Send it along with a top end quad/oct core system to run it for free as a gift package (with no string attached).

Thanks Uncle Ballmer

Good idea, but...

I don't want to sound like a linux fanboy (I am surely not), but all the efforts of Balmer are in largely vain.

MS-Windows is the dominant OS just because the Windows API has become the only API of choice for users and software developers alike.

If only those nerds at FOSS spent more time making a decent programming environment and SDKs, instead of discussing which esoteric piece of code they are going to put in the next kernel, there would be some competition. Now, we have 400 linux distros, all with different API's, environments e.t.c.

But, google just entered the linuxworld, and they will make ONE programming environment that will work. It does not matter how Chrome OS will look, if it will be easy to use, what utils and software it will have, or even if it's going to be an instant hit.
Just the ability to run your PowerDVD and Tomb Raider on some other platform than the Windows API (ex ChromeOS API) is going to be a win-win-win-win for the users.

A good alternative API for software developers (ex Cyberlink) to develop on would instantly get competition going, and eclipse Windows along with it's lousy integrated tools, registery, memory leaks etc.

And don't say it can't happen. Yahoo and it's overbloated search were dominant back in the 90's, and they even tried to enter new markets too, but look now ...

Again, I don't have anything against micorsoft or linux, I just love to see competition going on. Much like I love to see software devels supporting both MMX/SSE microcode and 3DNow microcode, while back in 1996 it was only MMX microcode, it would be interesting to happen the same to the Windows API. Whatever the other API would be!

no way win7 hangover may be dangerous.

I just revived my old box - guess what? P3 800mhz and some 300megs of ram are able to provide me a music, basic web browsing and document edition. Neither vista nor win7 can do this, ubuntu 9 can. no drivers necessary, beat that MS!
