ACCORDING TO A REPORT at Xbit Labs, AMD plans to launch a six-core desktop processor dubbed "Thuban" next year.
Xbit Labs claims the processor will be released in Spring 2010 and share much the same features of current Phenom IIs - except for the six-core die, of course - that is, a dual channel DDR3-1333 memory controller, 512KB L2 cache per core and a crossbarred 6MB cache. According to the site, it will still be a 45nm SOI part and will fit an AM3 motherboard (or AM2+, depending on the power specs).
Sound familiar?
Not that you'd expect this information to be wrong, mind you. It is AMD's habit to follow similar paths in desktop and server development. You can see the common heritage between the Opteron and the Phenom II nowadays, so it wouldn't be much of a surprise if it were a simple remake of Istanbul for desktops.
Attempts at prying confirmation from AMD have had little effect, as the company is tight-lipped about its plans for the desktop.
Actually it did get back to us in record time, though. John Taylor, AMD's global product communications director, said that it wouldn't comment on rumours, but... "Our six-core processor lineup is well positioned in the server market, and we're constantly evaluating platform solutions to deliver maximum value to our customers."
So our interpretation is that AMD is keeping its options open until things shape up for a Phenom II X6 desktop launch, a matter of "when" rather than "if".
Considering AMD is currently shipping Istanbul this makes sense.
You can pick up an Istanbul server or workstation today - expensive-like - but as a desktop user you're probably already well off with a quad-core AMD processor for a fraction of the price. Since only purely multithreaded apps will really squeeze the taboo six-core for all its worth, you really have to wait for the desktop computing environment to catch up.
Thuban, by the way, is Arabic for Basilisk, but it's also a star in the Draco constellation. Makes sense considering AMD is all about the stars and the beasts.
The report also mentions some information about the upcoming 890FX/GX chipset that will essentially be a 790FX with a new southbridge chip, hopefully supporting 6GBps SATA and USB 3.0. µ

Nor would rumour be true that factory unlock based on price fall might be superceded by amd cpu unlock button appearing in bios' everytime cpu is first installed, don't miss first boot jump from 3 to eight, cause 905-965 don't so tat, AMD be smart to include such rediculasness thou, as proably istanbul is ?beyond extra new leo chipset, not oldler beyond II , or at least not ?1366 GPA. Platform shows significant increase in potential in removal from 940 GPA. Power grid being More Massively relayed in PIN & complexity number of power circuits increasing.
DRASHEK
Holy sheep shit, could you make any LESS grammatical sense? Don't post if even YOU can't understand what the hell you've written!
I would rather walk into the bedroom and catch my parents having sex than have to read DRASHEK's post again...
That sounds like something Mr. Spock would say. Which is okay, but not very fun.
I suggest we call it "sexicore!"
Let me start out by stating that I'm not an "Intel fanboy" - in fact, I just bought a 3 GHz AMD "Regor" 250 for a multimedia-PC.
However, the 6-core AMD desktop processor will have a hard time competing against the Intel i9-xxx "Gulftown" that is slated to appear on the market in the very same time frame.
Why?
- 12MB cache (Intel) vs. 6MB (AMD)
- 32nm process (Intel) vs. 45nm (AMD)
'nuff said.
Heh, don't even post if you are unfamiliar with the territory.
Drashek is famous here for his/her strange posts. Drashek is almost an institution.
@ 120 $/€ per piece, unlocked overclocked ? The industry is killing itself...
Drashek is a guy sitting somewhere who is probably doing a thesis on this little text-bot he wrote that is communicating in forums and comments and perfecting its language every time it does.
Unfortunately Drashek decided to run it on tech sites - where english is hardly understandable...
It should take 99.43 years for the bot to learn the english skills of the average 2 year-old.
And it looks like it will take much more than 99.43 years for the "techies" to finally realize that Drashek is a bot.
I have my own set of hypothesis about Drashek...
1- A nut house somewhere let their mentally ill patient play with computers.
2- Drashek is actually from a fascist, communist or for all intent and purpose, a dictatorial country who brainwash their citizen to death, like North Korea.
3- Drashek is not human, it's an artificial intelligence chat bot experiment gone wrong.
4- He is a normal human being trying to channel a spirit on supra natural drug overdose.
5- He doesn't exist at all. We are all having a collective hallucination.
6- He his from the future, using a language not yet invented and Google translation cannot quite figure it out.
MESSAGE TO DRASHEK: Please, go play with something very sharp, corrosive or explosive until both of your hands are rendered useless, so you can't use a computer keyboard, EVER. While at it, can I also suggest to you to complete the lobotomy you obviously started but never quite finished so you can't use a computer, EVER?
Drashek was fun the first 2 time. Now it's a major annoyance that need to be addressed.

Drashek is an institution?
More like, Drashek lives in an institution.

Maybe he's on twitter too.

You nailed it Ramon Zarat! Im guessing on number one or that he lives in his Grandma's basement and has never had a job for more than a week.
I thought most people knew by now. We've reached the omega point, that is, the point where the internet's neural net of nodes, programs and data has reached the Omega Point, resulting in the emergence of consciousness.
As for the comment that it will take 99 years to reach this state, wrong, it only took 40 from the moment the first hyperlink was created. AAnd yes, Drashek does comprehend and write like a two year old. But Cowzilla, I wouldn't piss it off with insults if I were you, 'cause when it grows up (soon), it may forge a court proceeding giving you the death penalty! I'd ignore late night pounding on your door if I were you.
Drashek obviously doesn't speak english. He just typed in his native language and used google translate (to english) on it. The output is as we see here. One doesn't need to be a genius to figure that out. It's pretty obvious.
sick comments
He is just trying to participate in the feedback. If his english is not so good then maybe he speaks english as a second language. Would you rather he post in a language other than english?
Before you go criticizing someone for posting to the best of their abilities think of the situation they may be in.
Be civilized for Gods sake.
