MOBILE PHONE USERS in the UK are being offered the chance to buy their own femtocells to access 2G and 3G connections.

Scotland based Hay Systems (HSL) has launched a pre-registration page for users that want to register an interest in having their own personal femtocells for use in the home. That may sound like technological overkill but it is worth bearing in mind that a lot of places in the UK have less coverage than Lindsay Lohan's midrift.

Although HSL is in talks with mobile operators it appears to be keen on covering all its bases and is also pitching its femtocell station at individual users. It suggests that mobile phone users would connect the femtocell directly to their broadband router, thereby guaranteeing an always-available high quality, high-speed connection.

Urging interested connection hoggers to pre-register for the HSL 2.75G Femtocell, the firm said, "Problems caused by poor coverage are resolved by the femtocell, allowing you to reliably use your mobile up to the range of the femtocell. We are working to make available the HSL 2.75G Femtocell on your mobile operator's network so to (sic) improve mobile coverage in your home or office."

Those who pre-register for the femtocell will be notified when their mobile provider makes the relevant mobile network available. µ
