NOKIA's MOVES to jump on the netbook bandwagon seem to involve jumping in and out of different chip maker's beds.
According to Digitimes, the handset maker is set to release a smartbook based on the ARM chip.
It has been known that Nokia planned a netbook for awhile now and the firm even announced one a few days ago. It has been dubbed the Nokia Booklet 3G and that was going to be based on the Atom chip.
But details are starting to emerge that Nokia has been flirting with other manufacturers to also build an ARM based machine, unless it wants to snuggle up to Google and run Android.
Orders for the ARM machine are starting to flow to Taiwan based handset makers. According to Digitimes, Nokia is likely to outsource the production to either Compal Electronics or Foxconn. Other details are a little loose. Although Nokia has been using ARM for years, quite how Intel will react to the phone outfit's bed hopping is anyone's guess.
Nokia aims to make a buck or two extra by extending its Ovi services from handsets to PC products, as the Booklet 3G will come with Ovi features such as Ovi Music Store, Ovi Maps and also Ovi Suite, Digitimes said. µ
ARM: Cheaper to buy, more power efficient and has a sane instruction set. BSD and Linux Distros as well as Android and pretty much all mobile software is targeted at ARM, it was only a matter of time.
ARM: It doesn't run the Windows OS that Ma and Pa Kettle are expecting.
This won't last - as soon as Intel does what it swears in court that it doesn't do (lean on their customers for exclusivity) but also promises to stop doing - Nokia will drop the ARM like a wet bag of cement.

ARM does run Windows OS, more like Windows CE. It can also run on Linux too. ARM has been around for a long time. What CPU do you think powered many hot selling PDA's and phones, certanily not Atom or anything else X86 based.
second time i've come across theinquirer after getting my news from http://www.smartbook.asia - thanks for the scoup i i'm pretty sure that despite how cheap it is, it will still be a home run for a lot of mobile users
Nokia will not put all its eggs in one basket and hence its choice of technology on the Netbook category of products. On the processor sides it will have both arm holdings as wel as Intel Atom and likewise on the software side it will offer windows 7 on atom based netbooks and perhaps linux on the arm based netbook. On the linux side they already have a smartphone now ..so its interesting times ahead.
let the best technology (cost effective) win.
