Spotify comes to Android

Indie developer strikes first
Tuesday, 18 August 2009, 16:45

A SPOTIFY CLIENT called Droidify has been released for the Android mobile phone operating system. But it's not from the eponymous music streaming company.droidifyy

A cheeky developer who operates under the synonym Bobocat Zed, has written the application which accesses Spotify's back-end, acting more or less like the desktop or Iphone version.

An official build of Spotify for Android was aired at Google's IO conference back in May this year. But it looks like Bobocat Zed has given up waiting.

Unfortunately, the screenshot above is as far as the INQUIRER reached in running the application, because a £9.99-a-month premium Spotify subscription is required and we are notorious cheapskates.

The software seems to work over both 3G and WiFi. Both connected in our tests so we assume it works once the required credit card details have been surrendered.

Maybe this could be a developing trend: if companies can't get their software for a platform to market quickly, independent developers will get there first. µ

Swedish artist and composer Magnus Uggla has launched a scathing attack on the owners of Spotify. After discovering that Sony BMG is a shareholder and after receiving virtually no payment from his music being played there, he has withdrawn his tracks from the service declaring, “I’d rather be raped by The Pirate Bay.”
