AMD claims it is good at being discrete

INTEL RIVAL AMD claims it has finally managed to become number one somewhere in the chip market.

In a statement the outfit said it's taken first place in the discrete graphics market, with more than 53 per cent market share.

The reason apparently is that the ATI HD 4000 line is selling like hotcakes, particularly the Radeon HD 4530 and Radeon HD 4670 that support DirectX 10.1.

For those who came in late 'discrete' means that the GPU is not integrated with the chipset that controls motherboard functions.

Intel is probably still the overall leader if integrated graphics are also taken into account, but hey let's not rain on AMD's parade.

Jon Peddie, founder and principal, Jon Peddie Research said that as consumers want better visual computing capabilities in their notebooks, the market for discrete graphics is only expected to grow.

"The increase in volume in the second quarter of this year, and in AMD's mobile discrete market share, is a testament to consumers' appetite for visual computing, and manufacturers' readiness to satisfy it as we move into what has traditionally been the busiest season of the year," he said.

It's just as well that AMD bought ATI then. µ

Imagine what...

...AMD could do if they actually improved upon their Firestream and the relevant SDKs to go against Cuda.

From what I read, there are universities, science laboratories, even investment firms (ex goldman) that are willing to pay loads of cash for Cuda hardware to accelerate their systems. This is how nVidia makes it's money.

Oh, the graphics. I always trusted AMD for graphics cards. To me, nVidia cards is nothing but and factory overcloked and overvolted thing to compensate for enginnering incompetence. I don't refer to the laptop meltdown. Several 7600's had also problems with throwing artifacts right and left and problems with video. My cousins laptop had a lot of those. My ATI laptop (hp) never did a hitch. Ever.

Also, all those haters have nothing against AMD/ATI but stuff about it's corporate structure (and probably some CPUs) *never* their graphics cards. Even theINQ didn't managed to find something about ATIs (they would if they could) .I can't say the same with nVidia. He, he... If the product is fine, why I should care about the corporate structure of the company?

So, AMD for me.

So what

Who cares, I'm waiting for AMD to integrated DX11 graphics into their CPU's. Once GPGPU apps have been written for DX11 lets see Intel keep up with AMD then.

ATI's graphics tech is proven, I'm sceptical about Larabee until its demonstrated. Intel make great CPU's, but don't get me started on the performance of the graphics tech to date.

Intel Still Leads

Intel Still has a lot more of the integrated graphics market share then either AMD/ATI or Nvidea. But then again a lot of nothing is still nothing. AMD/ATI is in the lead regardless of the # of integrated graphics sold by Intel. I wish they would measure this in terms of the price of the graphics. Then AMD/ATI and Nvidea would be way ahead of Intel.

BTW I want to see more laptops or whatever they are called these days, with ATI graphics, and less with shit integrated Intel graphics.

Not for Desktop

This is only for discrete MOBILE graphics. AMD still doesn't have a 50% share the the discrete desktop market.

AMD SELLS 60% OF DESKTOP Market....

AMD was first with integrated graphics in K7 platform. Before people even had idea what assention of numbering is about. Now that Chipper has eveolved to SLI/Crossfire & Wow.

AMD might have quit Glo.flo when 40 nm REALLY WENT BAD. Blaming old contractee' TSMC, which tsmc accepts for orders. Whose in DOG House? Yap,Yap. bark,Bark.

Or whose Under DogHouse?

Can next parsing of companies include AMD, Stock seems to indicate, its AMD last Shot at Public. Maybe small Market Window: (transition) time Soley of Vista from Sept '9 to end of Oct'9, will be Vista ULTIMATE64 time to shine, AS Mike Magee pointed out years ago, when mike was well enough to write.

Then 7 & 890 ulti.mate of nt6 vista/7, with 990, 7: Oh, You Dog.next yr.

Dog Gone, Its Flaming Industry.

been to a computer store lately?

I'm sure some stores aren't this way... But my local computer store used to have two selves of nvidia and half a shelf of ati, but lately they have totally reversed, 2 shelves of ati and half a shelf of nvidia.

All the graphics reviews seem to have a pro ati/amd slant lately as well, as it seems the 4770/4870/4890 are untouchable in their price range.

The last graphics card I bought was in the $500 range, which felt stupid even as I bought it (I could get a wii and and an 360) not to mention the rest of the computer.... so seeing GOOD graphics cards for $100-$250 is a huge relief. Too bad they didn't do that a few years ago, it could have gone a long way to saving pc gaming I think.

No surprises there...

If I were to buy a card in the lower/middle segment it would be AMD/ATI.
Not because it supports DX10.1 rather than DX10.0, but simply because they provide more bang for the buck. Up to and including the HD 4870.

The HD 4670 is also exceptionally power efficient, using very little power.

If, on the other hand, I wanted plenty of graphics power for gaming while keeping the electricity bill at bay I'd still go for the GF GTX-series.

ATI is First

One could also say that NVidia was 'Bumped' out of first

At last we crush the nay-sayers!

A good article and I would have to agree with it, apart from already stated ‘not including Intel in the Integrated Graphics’ segment.

I remember all those ‘Green Goblin Bois’, not so long back, ranting on about DX 10.1 and how it was not at all important.
Well, girls….. like all the other punters out there; I study the specs and if I see that the full standard DX 10.1 ‘is’ supported, then I say, “why pay loads for a card that doesn’t ?”

When existing titles start to include this support, then those girls who bought a green card are left out in the cold – see yah, bois…

Notwithstanding certain game companies who play cahoots with assured graphic card producers, most game houses will move forward with the new technology and nobody is going to say otherwise (bring it on!)

Well done, ATI!

Lots of love,
Dave xxx

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.
