THE BLOKE who founded Netscape, Marc Andreessen, is having another crack at the browser wars.
Andreesen is backing a little known startup called RockMelt. Not much is known about what the browser is supposed to do which makes it so different, but it apparently is to be built from the ground up.
However it faces a market packed with Internet Exploder, Firebadger, Opera and the recent versions of Safari and Chrome. They are free and have more or less the same features.
Browsers are really browsers and there is not a lot you can do with them other than, er, browse. So why is Andreessen wasting his money giving punters another flavour of vanilla?
Some pundits are saying that Andreessen is still miffed at the way the Vole took away his Netscape dream. But that theory suggests that the man has a huge psychological complex about an event so far in the past that he is prepared to waste shedloads of money just to make a slight dent in the Vole's empire. However we would have thought investing in Firefox would have done the same thing and much better.
The other theory is that RockMelt will be optimised for or integrated with Facebook in some way, making it into a social networking browser. However the other browsers which are optimised for social notworking have not proved particularly successful. Who has heard of Flock for example?
The only reason we can think that RockMelt would be worth investment is that if it does something radically different. What that might be at this point is anyone's guess.
Andreessen told the New York Times that RockMelt would "stand out" from the pack of browsers currently on the market. He vaguely said that it would focus on the "network of complex Web sites and applications" into which the Internet has evolved. In otherwords it might be more intelligent and gathers information from different sources based on previous browsing, information searches and other networking requirements.
Time will tell if it is radically different from anything else. µ

"Browsers are really browsers and there is not a lot you can do with them other than, er, browse. So why is Andreessen wasting his money giving punters another flavour of vanilla?"
Err ..... the value in browsers which Mr Andreessen sees, is that they can host/present/reveal/unveil exclusive new content which renders tired old information supporting dodgy intelligence and crooked systems supplied by other browsers, obsolete and also probably criminal, as well as lacking any moral credibility too. First Degree Guilt or a Valid Plea of Insanity and Psychopathic Dysfunction and Disconnect is on their limited Menu of Choice, methinks.
Controlling Exclusive Information to Serve AI Beta Agenda to Networks InterNetworking is a most Powerful Control Weapon of Massive Destruction against Terrorising Systems and Stupid Browsers ...... and thus is to be applauded.
Bravo, Sir. And it would be almost just what an Alien needs in these Changing Times to create a Bit of a Stir 42 Discredit the Indefensible and Harness the Power of Out of this World Communications.

I use Flock on the daily basis, alongside feuerfuchs - while latter is used for all things work and all things nasty, armed with noscript and such - flock does lovely job for facebook/photobucket/livejournal integration. But still is not well-thought-thru. so something which would speak all blog languages and have all kinds of notification stuff that ffox plugins somehow fail to deliver - would make a kill
He's The Ultie-bomber.
Since FF guys are lending MS own hand to make FF like IE. And MS is phasing out IE for Gazelle a super modular approach (http://on10.net/blogs/sarahintampa/More-Details-on-Gazelle-Microsoft-Researchs-Browser-OS/). It could be a wise decision to start following Gazelle track and hopefully at some point in time only IE and this newone will be standing as rivals as next generation browsers.
