IT IS LOOKING increasingly likely that Unicom will be selling Iphones in China.
Although China is known for manufacturing Iphones - both legit and knock-offs - behind its borders, its residents have heretofore been unable to get their hands on the real deal.
With such a huge mobile telecoms market looming in China it is something of a no-brainer that the gadget greengrocer would seek entry. Indeed it is looking increasingly likely that the state-owned telecom Unicom is about to ink an agreement with the US firm that will see it sell Iphones to Chinese punters.
"Talks between us and Apple have been going on for some time, but no agreement has been reached yet," said Unicom spokesman Yi Difei in a statement. He continued, "There are all kinds of possibilities. There is no particular timetable for the talks."
That's about as vague as you can get without denying that some kind of deal is in the works, which leads us to suspect that Unicom's negotiations with Apple might still be ongoing.
Despite this, reports already suggest that a three year, five million phone deal is the most likely outcome, but so far Apple PR in the UK has remained tight-lipped about the whole thing, as usual.
Also in China, 100,000 recruits are set to be called up to test mobile phone applications at the behest of the other major telecom China Mobile. The company said that it wants the volunteers to test mobile apps that it plans to offer in its app store, which is to be called Mobile Market. Participants will be rewarded with prizes and other hardcore mobile user sweeteners.
Presumably China Mobile will be looking to launch before the all-consuming Apple App Store hits Chinese shores and palms. If it ever does, that is. µ
Even though it's getting more difficult by the year to get a hold of fake goods in China (most of our knock offs are now being imported from Korea and Xinjiang), it's been far too long for the Iphone to do well here. The market is far too saturated with unlocked Iphones, knockoffs, upgraded knockoffs, and copycats. Expanding the market into China after giving us the short end of the stick for this long seems like a recipe for failure.
@Patrick. As far as I'm concerned, proper nouns begin with capital letters, regardless of the maker's inability to conform to the rules of the English language. You on the other hand, need to go back to primary school and learn the difference between "your" and "you're".
Would you guys please at least look at Apple's web site or anything made by Apple. It's spelled iPhone not Iphone. Lower case i, capital P! Good lord.
Yaaaay burn china to the ground....
already taken care of
WHAT!!!
We gave them IPhones they will be exploding like firecrackers in no time.
Oh wait, those are "iFone"s.
"[China's] residents have heretofore been unable to get their hands on the real deal."
The writer of this drivel needs to get out more. Even in central China, well away from the huge commerce centres, I've been able to get my hands on real (not knock-off) iPhones within weeks of their release.
Unicome executives came out today, said the reports are false.
.. Sorry had to put a Quake reference in there.
Ahem from your 'Sister' publication.
"Yesterday, Chinese mobile provider China Unicom was reported to have purchased five million iPhones from Apple and would launch the überpopular smartphone in September. But today, the company denied that such a deal has been made.
"The report is not true," China Unicom spokesman Yi Difei told the Associated Press."

You have a Iphone in china?...Man your behind the times. I have friends who live there and they get better phone than an Iphone there. Wish I lived there to get the newest phone from korea and japan. The states sucks cause everybody hear claim a iphone is the best when it picture quality sucks, less option and crappy 3G.
It honestly doesn't matter whether or not China unicom gets with the picture, I can go to any major shopping center and buy a genuine iPhone that works flawlessly with my MacBook Pro here in Guangzhou China, and my friends in smaller cities report the same thing. This has been the case since around the time the original iPhone was released. So the question really becomes: who gives a crap what China Unicom sell when they let me use my 3G without problems?
