Storm erupts over a baby tee shirt

Beats mashed banana and dribble
Fri Aug 14 2009, 13:23

AN ONLINE STORM has arisen over a baby's tee shirt that's being flogged with the motto "they shake me".

An angry Twitter campaign has started after a complaint about the tee shirt was posted on the popular Aussie parenting blog Mamamia.

The tee shirt is made by an outfit called Cotton On Kids. The standard of intellectual debate seen on the Twitter and blog posts is incredibly high.

"What the hell are you people thinking and how dare you try to turn children into the sickest kind of human billboards to advertise your smart arse and grossly insensitive slogans?" read one blog post .

Another wondered if the next thing the company might release would be one with the slogan, "My Parents Sexually Abuse Me".

The tweets are in a similar vein. The theme is that there is humour and then there are sick references to child abuse. There are the usual vows to never step foot in a Cotton On Kids store again.

Other slogans the outfit prints onto babies's tee shirts include "I'm a tits man" and "I'm living proof my mum is easy", so we think we get the thread of its humour.

Cotton On Kids said it "serviced all personalities" and its products were "intentionally edgy and irreverent and are certainly not meant to be taken seriously." The baby in the picture might have been shaken but does not look stirred.

Of course the company must be dimly aware that parents with toddlers no longer have any sense of humour after spending two years with no sleep, dealing with nappies and vomit. µ

Meh

This T-shirt isn't anything new. I remember laughing at it YEARS back when T-Shirt Hell was just picking up in popularity.

People who tweet = twits.

Remind me again...

...what was the IT angle? That there was an outrage campaign using Twitter? That Cotton on Kids has a website? What? WTF is this on the Inquirer for?

adoption

Dear interested_party,

It is reported that it wasn't MJ's sperm, either.
The name of the process involved is called "adoption".

Ever wonder why some of Angelina Jolie's kids are black?

hmmm...

Hehe

The only thing that more funny the t-shirts is how every story with or about kids turns to Michael bashing spree. Seriously, what kind of a person would admin to sleeping with kids if he wasn’t just sleeping with them. So for all of you in the ‘MJ is bad’ crowed I have two thoughts: First- he is dead lets move on. Second- if you really care about the kids just consider this, MJ was 1 man while the religious institutions have thousands.

Those T-shirts are no way as 'bad' as Michael Jackson was.

If a 50 year old man in my neighbourhood was to have various 12 year old boys staying in his bed, and a queue of parents dropping their boys off to take his place, then there would have been uproar. But when it's Michael Jackson, and he has some money sticking out of his pocket, then the parents seem happy to send their boys to him.

That's way more offensive than a t-shirt.

The parents who sent their boys to Michael Jackson, after the Jordy Chandler allegations, those parents need to be investigated.

Jackson wouldn't even fight the allegations in court, instead he settled out of court for a rumoured $15 million. And lost the Pepsi sponsorship.

They say the Jordy Chandler child abuse allegations that Jackson wouldn't fight are because Jordy could identify marks on Jackson's penis.

I can't believe people are buying his music, radio stations are playing his songs and tv channels are showing his videos.

There should be some balance to all of this. Very few media people seem prepared to say it like it is with the wierdo Jacksons.

How can a black man have white kids?

Why did he pick the eggs of one woman, and choose another to carry the foetus? Is it to deny the child any chance of a natural real "mother"? Just how messed up do you have to be to pick that method for having children. IVF is fine, it's the picking of 2 different mothers so the neither can claim they are the child's mother that shows how much of a nasty piece of work he truly was.

How Dare You Get Upset!

How dare you get so upset over this t-shirt, when you allowed Michael Jackson to get away with dangling his baby over the balcony railing at a U.K. hotel!!!
None of you did anytyhing to have him thrown in jail over that, but you're complaining about a silly t-shirt.
For shame on you!

Rights?

Freedom of speech? and how many other types of media make fun of other peoples problems and diseases? Its stupid to even question the T-Shirt, Id walk around with a t-shirt that says "Scream N' Shake" with a stick figure adult shaking a screaming stick figure child.

Who cares about Twits

Yawn, an "angry Twitter campaign." Who cares? Maybe they'll start an online petition too. Is this what constitutes "action" in this day and age? No wonder nothing changes.

Honestly, this INQ article undeservingly dignifies this "online storm".

Hmmm...

Any chance Nick wears a shirt that says, "My Parent's Shook Me". ;)

A bit late off the mark

These outraged twits are a bit late off the mark as the t-shirts have been available for several years.

Being able to make fun of something bad is a sign of facing up to the problem, coming to terms with it and addressing it. Wanting to ban any references to it is denial though, and shows that these outraged people cannot face up to the problem and just wish it would go away.

nothing new..

This exact t-shirt has been sold by tshirthell.com for years now (at least 5). They also have a number of other shirts that will get your arse kicked for wearing.

They've already banned it

A pity, really, but TShirthell is much more fun. Gems include 'Daddy only wanted a blowjob' 'Hung like a five year old' and 'I enjoy a good spanking'

If you don't like it- don't buy it!!

I don't understand all the fuss!!! If you don't like it- don't buy it!! No one is forcing anyone to put one on their baby. I am the mother of a ten month old, and though I wouldn't choose to buy one, I'm not going mental over it!!

posted by : Vicki, 14 August 2009 Complain about this comment
Brilliant...

Where can I order one for my niece?

Her mother will go mental (short journey), but my brother will love it!

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
