AMD HAS JUST put out its latest and fastest Phenom II server processor.
The 3.4GHz Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor will cost $245, the same price as its predecessor the 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition chip.
The two processors are nearly identical. Both CPUs have the same amount of cache, compatibility with both DDR2 and DDR3 memory, and an unlocked multiplier for overclockability.
It can't be installed in an AM2+ system however, because the CPU's TDP has been upped to 140 watts, but AMD claims that test systems have been able to push the new processor up to 4.6GHz.
Of course it depends on the cooling system to overclock to those sorts of speeds and word on the web is that you can't manage it with a standard heatsink fan assembly.
Normal users probably won't notice the six percent increase in CPU frequency. AMD has sent us a sample chip and the blokes in the lab are currently playing with it to see how good it really is.
The chip will be a bit of a stop-gap though, while the world plus dog waits to see what Intel's Core i5 lineup can do when it hits the shops, probably later this year. µ
...than a warehouse full of Swiss cheese. As pointed out above, it's a desktop part, some AM2/AM2+ boards can take 140W TDP chips, like the one I have, and the 965 BE is priced a lot higher than the 955 BE part.
Well researched, Nick 'Intel Inside' Farrell!
My Asus M3A78-T came advertised as 140W, sure would be nice to be sure if it would work or not.
Damn man, 140 W is 140 W
I long for the day when Core i7 performance levels reach something like 65 W minimum, damn energy prices seem to go up each and every day.
...but in Nick's eyes, what is a server but a desktop with rails on the side, eh?
I gotta call bullshit on this article Nick, did you actually do any research on this chip? or are you just reprinting someone elses crap? or had you decided to spread bullshit all on your own...
Asus's entire line of AM2+ motherboards has this part listed as a compatible CPU, just as a reference...
Oh, and for your reference, Phenom II is a desktop part, Opteron is their server part...
Maybe you should stick to covering Apple stories...
AM2+ supports 140W tdp. The 9950 phenom 1 was a 140 watt part.
Have we forgotten already that the Phenom 9950 was released with a 140W TDP before being downgraded to 125W several weeks later? Quite a few AM2+ boards shipped with a sticker promising 140W CPU compatibility on the box.
They increase the frequency and the power.
So this is just the same part I already have.
I can increase the 955BE to 3.4Ghz with increased power.
It wasn't so long ago that it looked like Intel and AMD had power consumption under control, and now we have 130W Core i7s and 140W Phenom IIs...
PC Pro reckon they couldn't get theirs past 3.7GHz...less than the 955BE.

Whether they're just unlucky, I don't know.
Also, the RRP is a bit low in comparison to what SOME sites are selling it at (Trying to cash in maybe?)

Sounds like a far better deal to get the 955BE and overclock the sh*t out of it :) £60 less and mine hits 3.8GHz with no issues at all!
