Blackberry Storm 2 has WiFi

About time, too

RESEARCH IN MOTION'S Blackberry Storm 2 handset will feature WiFi, according to leaked screen shots.

The Crackberry Storm 2 supposedly will only be available on contract with Vodafone. The telecom firm weathered calls for WiFi to be included in the first Blackberry Storm, with its line at the time being that it had concentrated its resources in producing a 3G touch-screen smartphone and didn't want anything to detract from that point. We almost believed that.

Or, it could have been making a lot more money out of data tariffs over its cellular network than it could with WiFi, which would gain it a revenue stream of approximately zero.

Leaked images of the Blackberry Storm 2 have appeared on the German website benezblog. They show the handset with a WiFi option appearing in the phone's connection menu.

Although the image looks genuine, it doesn't show the Storm 2 connected to an actual WiFi network so there's no real proof. However now we're somewhat more inclined to take Vodafone's word that it's real.

The INQ placed a call to RIM to verify these screen shots, but RIM came back with the company line, "Research In Motion does not comment on rumours or speculation." Vodafone also said the same thing.

This despite the phone apparently booted up and showing the handset on the "Vodafone.de" network. It's clearly the Blackberry Storm 2 model.

Reportedly the Blackberry Storm 2 will also appear exclusively at the US carrier Verizon across the pond. µ

Can you hear me now?

The Storm 2 will of course come to Verizon and of course have it's wifi disabled and removed as with the first Storm. :/ Why do you think there's two Storm models? The 9500 and 9530. The 9530 is Verizon's version.

Outstanding

Ahahaha.. WIFI? Something that old? Reminds me of the iPhone fanboys all crazy about MMS functionality, something Nokia had in my old Symbian brick since...2003....

WiFi on a Phone? Why?

Could someone tell me why I would want WiFi on a phone (any phone, including the iPhone or any BlackBerry)? Considering the falling prices of netbooks (or even legacy laptops with XP or Linux), if I absolutely need WiFi, wouldn't that be better suited than having it integrated into a phone? Most of thee reasons bruited about for the requests for WiFi are to avoid those pricey data plans when at home or at free hotspots. Excuse me; those same hotspots are all based around wireless-G or around a specific provider (either AT&T Mobility or, in some cases, VZW or Sprint when not based around wireless-G). If it's G, the connectivity is often built-in (or available dirt-cheap) in even legacy laptops; if it's provider-specific, you can still get connectivity options for cheap or nil (both AT&T Mobility and VZW offer USB connectors for their respective networks free with any data plan). In any case, there are much better options (that are available today) than praying for WiFi in a smartphone.

@Christopher Estep

erm... no I can't tell you why YOU would want wifi on a phone, I don't know you.

I can tell you why I do though - my phone is in my pocket at all times, my laptop won't fit in my pocket. TBH, I don't really get netbooks when I have perfectly usable internet on my TouchHD.

PS: Look up the meaning of the word "legacy" - it doesn't mean old.

No s***....

You revealed the exact reason why WiFi is so nice in your comment: "both AT&T Mobility and VZW offer USB connectors for their respective networks free with any data plan"

With any data plan. Key words. That shit's like $40/month, and if you have WiFi then you don't need it.

Blackberry crap

The blackberry storm is totally crap, so this is updated total crap.

I love blackberry storms, they generate lots of support call revenue because they are so rubbish.

Wifi = voip

one good thing you could do with wifi on your phone is have voip. So if you are traveling outside your office, outside your network, or outside the country you still have a number you can use to make and recieve calls and not be charged international rates.

Devil Da Husky facts? wifi

Devil Da Husky you are an idiot. There are two Storms because one is for Vodafone which is not CDMA and no WiFi was not diabled it wasn't built in at all. VZW does not care if it has WiFi or not because you have a Mandatory data plan. They will get paid regardless.

Christopher Estep...you would want WiFi on your phone to connect to your home network and do things like print wirelessly and communicate with other devices...laptops, cameras, ect.

4G=wifi=voip

Verizons LTE 4G technology is moving the wireless business towards more of a TCP/IP type network. Soon mobile calls will not be carried on RF waves and instead will move to Voip. this is guaranteed to happen. LTE covered areas will enable mobile downloading in the range of 5-12Mbps
