IDC HAS WARNED that the chip market is in weak condition as sales of PC chips fell another seven per cent from last year.
Its beancounters said that, despite the recent increase in demand and hopes of higher sales in the upcoming back-to-school season, the PC chip market was still struggling.
IDC analyst Shane Rau said some claim that traditional back-to-school PC buying season will create a bullish second half. However he thinks it will not.
True, PC chip shipments jumped 10.1 per cent from the first quarter. He also noted that this was mostly caused by inventory refreshes and not a return of significant end demand for PCs.
PC chip revenue for the second quarter also rose 7.9 per cent from the first quarter, but was down 15.3 per cent from the same period last year, so it had a long way to claw itself back.
Intel expanded its share of the market by 1.6 per cent to 78.9 per cent while AMD saw its share of the market fall by 1.6 per cent to 20.6 per cent, IDC said. µ
