BEANCOUNTERS AT IDC say that spending on Internet advertising declined in the US and worldwide for the second quarter of 2009.
Ad spending in the US dropped seven per cent, to $6.2 billion from $6.6 billion, and worldwide it fell five per cent, to $13.9 billion from $14.7 billion, compared with same period last year.
Advertising revenue has been falling for the last two quarters. For the first three months of 2009, Internet advertising revenue in the US was $5.5 billion, down a notable five per cent from $6.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008.
It appears that classified advertising took the greatest pummelling and fell 17 per cent in the second quarter, while display advertising lost 12 per cent.
Monster.com lost 31 per cent, but Google grew by a little bit.
IDC expects US advertisers to decrease their online ad spending in the third quarter but said that the Internet advertising climate is not expected to get any worse.
In a statement, Karsten Weide, IDC program director for digital media and entertainment, predicted that the industry will continue to see losses in the third and fourth quarters, but the growth rates - or the loss rates, if you will - should eventually begin to improve.
It will have to be 2010 before the economic news starts to get better, just in time for the world to end in 2012. µ
The animation success in America "The Simpsons" featured a funny spin on pharmaceutical products, one called "Ignore-it-All". So all the commercials or adds featuring violence or anything else as a matter of fact has lost it's effectiveness because of the pills we take.
Doesn't it feel like we are living in a dying world? Opps! Where is my bottle of "Ignore-it-All"
Certainly the rise in sleezoid, non-tech ads on The INQ reinforces the feeling. Or is that due to the absence of Mike and the fading away of Charlie and Sylvie? I really used to enjoy this rag.
And you say that as if it's a bad thing.
"For the first three months of 2009, Internet advertising revenue in the US was $5.5 billion, down a notable five per cent from $6.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008."
That is a very notable 5%, what with it being so close to the 10% mark and all.
I guess that AdBlock plugin works!
