Lenovo explains cracked Windows

No support for pirated software but you can upgrade for free
Tuesday, 4 August 2009, 17:12

LENOVO HAS ISSUED a statement to The INQ regarding the cracked Windows 7 RTM.

The statement appears to be an attempt by the Chinese maker of IBM computers to lay to rest 'Lenovo-Gate' from last week, when Win7 was cracked using one of its OEM keys months ahead of the official launch of the OS

We won't publish verbatim the email sent to us, just the edited highlights.

"An ISO image [loaded on a Lenovo system] containing the Windows 7 RTM (release to manufacturing), OEM key and marker file, was stolen and placed on a hacker forum in China," it begins.

The defendent continue m'lud: "The pirated OEM key is being disabled (it already has by Microsoft - Ed), and Lenovo strongly advises customers not to download Windows 7 from unauthorised sources."

Then there follows a reminder why not with dire warnings of "viruses, Trojans, and other malware and malicious code".

Just to make sure Lenovo is not seen to endorse pirated software in any way, shape or form, only the good legal kind that everyone loves and payd good money for, the company added: "Lenovo will provide a free license upgrade to Windows 7 for customers who purchase a Lenovo laptop or desktop PC with an eligible Windows Vista version between 26 June 2009 and 31 January 2010."

We can't help thinking that Lenovo should have extended this free upgrade to those who have installed the hookey Windows 7  by *cough* mistake, perhaps offering the upgrade as an amnesty? µ

Idiots

Who is the idiot with a real OEM key of Win7 that leaked it now? It would have been enough to wait for 3 month after Lenovo start selling PC and at that point Microsoft would have had real problems to blacklist the key.
Idiot. Idiot. Idiot, no free Win7.

Disabled how?

"The pirated OEM key is being disabled (it already has by Microsoft - Ed)"

No it hasn't. Microsoft released a statement implying that they were going to disable it, but as of today it has not been disabled at all. Windows update still very much works on these machines and none have reported any WGA popups yet.

pirate sometimes

I will admit to downloading pirated software on occasion to try it before I buy, if not I delete it. Vista was the exception the exception.I downloaded that vile peace of software and it was gone in 15 minutes. Unfortunately I have 2 computers with that excuse for an os and if I dont get a free copy from tech net,
(I dont remember if I got an invitation)
I will spend as long as it takes to get a pirated version of windows 7.I have paid for 2 copys of vista that I cant stand and didnt have a choice. You can built your own desktop but building a laptop is another story. If Microsoft was a good company, and it isnt it would replace every copy of vista that people dont want. I know there are people that like vista and there are people that also eat bugs. I dont like vista or eating bugs.

Authorized sources

...soooo if I download it from an authorized source, it will be legal for me to have?

hmm, well, Bittorrent is a legitimate form of OS distribution for Linux... I guess it would be for other OSes, too ;)

Windows Genuine Advantage.

If you buy a computer with a pirated copy of Windows on it and have a counterfeit, and you don't mind to narc out the seller.. Microsoft will give you a free legal copy. If you didn't get a counterfeit CD, Microsoft will give you a discount.
This program is designed to detect whitebox builders who sell a fake copy of Windows with each computer. It doesn't stop fly-by-night operators, though.
But if your WGA test fails even though your computer has a valid copy of Windows - that may be your problem?

Re:pirate sometimes

Hey I understand your feeling, but you might want to avoid publishing that kind of intent on a public thread that can be subject to subpoena.
Just saying.

The Usual

I'm pretty sure if Microsoft really wanted they could have made Vista and now win7 uncrackable.

Mr J

I bought a genuine OEM copy of Winxp 6 years ago.

The cost amortized over 6 years is almost giving the stuff away{Bill does anyway}
I am still getting great support from MS and every "4th person" can help with with any issues I can't solve.
Stop trying to steal, pay up or forever be trying to evade MS policing staff.
