Global Foundries signs up ST Microelectronics

First step beyond AMD
Wed Jul 29 2009, 11:01

CHIP MAKER Global Foundries has landed ST Microelectronics as its first customer besides AMD, from which it was spun off in March.

Industry pundits who were waiting for the announcement with bated breath can finally exhale.

GloFo, fuelled by Abu Dhabi cash, has been seeking to sign up new customers and shed its image as an AMD-only fab. Industry speculation pointed to ARM as a possible customer.

ST Microelectronics, a Swiss company which also has its own fabs, is best known for low-power chips for mobile devices and GloFo will be producing chips for ST on its 40nm line suitable for mobiles and consumer electronics, says PC World.

Earlier this week, ST Micro posted a second quarter net loss of $318 million, compared with a loss of $47 million in the same period last year, much in line with analysts' predictions. Revenue fell 17 percent to $1.99 billion from $2.39 billion. µ

Kyro II

I remember the STMicro Kyro II, it was awesome at the time. Still sort of wish a new desktop chip would get released by these guys...

Good

... now hopefully ARM is next.

Oh ya, and Surya that was the dumbest thing I've read in a long time. You deserve a prize for that one, a darwin award if we are lucky.

@ Surya

What possible good could nVidia gain from buying AMD?

#1 Anti-trust, as getting a hold of ATI would have the regulators up in arms.

#2 Intel would just cancel the X86 license as they have a it cant be sold clause

Hmm, good GloFo can attract new customer

AMD now did not have competitive products for their microprocessor. I expect until quarter 3 2010, they will still loss. Intel will roll out Larrabee in that quarter. In that schedule, NVIDIA will buy AMD after AMD shed additional debts at least 1 billion dollar.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
