AT&T blocks popular photo site

But only temporarily it seems
Mon Jul 27 2009, 12:33

YANKEE TELCO AT&T might have bitten off a bit more than it can chew after it decided to block a popular photo site.

The imageboard 4chan.org has seen access cut to some of its most popular boards including the imaginatively titled /r9k/ and /b/.

Writing in his bog, moot, who founded 4chan, said that AT&T is in fact filtering or blocking the site for many of its customers. AT&T is not saying anything, apparently.

Now 4chan is not the sort of website that you can safely surf to with your family and expect to see nothing but wholesome snaps of puppies and kittens.

Certainly it is the sort of place where NSFW is an understatement. In other words, visiting it while at work could get you fired.

However the people who visit the site are not your usual crowd of pervs. A lot of them are just hardcore geeks with bad attitudes.

With its wild west flavour 4chan is fairly influential in web culture and it is famous for its hacking members.

It is also the main hub for Anonymous, a group that has pursued a public campaign against Scientology.

Blocking a site because it does not fit into your view of the universe is a pretty dumb thing to do. Not only are there script kiddies on the site, but also some rather well seasoned hackers too. Blocking 4chan could be construed as looking for trouble, so to speak.

Judging by the comments that have appeared on various forums and message boards, it would seem that it might not be a question of whether or not AT&T could be attacked for blocking 4chan, but when and how.

It might not come to that, however. Rumours suggest that AT&T blocked 4chan to defend itself against a distributed denial of service attack, and might even have restored access to it already. µ

get what you pay for

What do you expect from a company that set up an illegal secret spy room for the NSA at their San Francisco office? I guess after U.S. Congress passes a law granting you immunity from lawsuits, you feel that you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want. Maybe if people would wake up and stop using AT&T is would send a message. ...who am I kidding though, stupid people all over the world need to use their Iphones.

Took a gander. Looks like about 11 GB of self indulgent navel gazing tripe to me.

Hydra

okay, tell me the wisdom of blocking user access to a place known as the interwebz anus? That is like telling militents that the goverment banned them from owning guns, and like that, it will end loudly and noisly with AT&T getting raepd.

That's clever...

In our justice system, do we arrest the victim of a rape in order to serve justice? No. So why has AT&T made 4chan the victim, here?

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
