THE ON AGAIN OFF AGAIN affair between AMD and Dell appears to be on again, according to Statesman.com.
For ages Dell has not really promoted the PCs that it ships with AMD gear under the bonnet, leading some analysts to opine that the relationship was less than a happy one.
However over the weekend the Inspiron 546, which is a mainstream desktop featuring an AMD processor, is getting a push from Dell and has pride of place on its website. This is the first time in 18 months that Dell has pushed an AMD based PC model.
Dell historically has been in bed with Intel, but has at least flirted with AMD over the years. Whenever AMD appeared to be ahead of Intel technology and price-wise, Dell included processors from the smaller chip outfit in its range.
It seemed to go back to Intel recently, like an unfaithful husband returning to the mother of his children after a torrid affair on a business trip. Some think it was the Barcelona chip that seemed to drive Dell back into Intel's arms.
But now Dell's affair with AMD seems to be on again, thanks to AMD's presently superior budget graphics chipsets. Bob Grimm, AMD's director of client product marketing, said that his company provides a good package of processors and graphics.
As a result if punters are in the market for multimedia PCs, AMD makes for a good deal. And good deals in the midst of an economic downturn make Dell's ears prick up.
However Dell is saying nothing about its increased promotion of an AMD based PC model, so all this might simply be dreamt up in Grimm's head. µ
And this happens within two months of Intel receiving a beating from the EU. Hardly a coincidence.
Dell and other computer makers now have been free to choices.
Yes, they do offer AMD parts, but outdated/cheap and slower ones. Why'd some preffer Phenom X4 9750 to Phenom II X3 720 for example (same price range)? Or Radeon 3650 instead of 4770?
With no upgrades available this model looks like a cheap excuse for Dell for not having much of an AMD in their price list...
Looks more like they just opened up old SKU's and just added a newer Video card.
Looks more like AMD had a trailer on site that hadn't been onloaded and Dell was able to purchase the procs dirt cheap because they had been sitting around from the first love affair.
Dell was blowing out Prescott garbage for intel after Core 2 came out.
Heck, the only X2's they're selling are the terribly high-wattage 7xxx chips... there's no option for the IMO superior 4x50e series.
The lack of any 45nm SKUs is quite telling.
