AMD's 785G motherboards tip up

Bored of waiting for August launch
Wednesday, 22 July 2009, 08:02

INTREPID INQ SPIES have caught a sneaky glimpse of Gigabyte's and Asus' new 785G mainboards on an Aussie hardware e-tailer's website, which was purportedly selling them. Sadly, the links were quickly disabled, but we did manage to grab some screenshots and the specs before the information disappeared.

PCcasegear.com, a site notorious for selling hardware before it's generally available, was showing off three Gigabyte and one Asus motherboards based on the AMD 785G chipset, the imminent follow-on to the 780 chipset.

Gigabyte's GA-MA785G-UD3H, being flogged at AUS$129, integrates the ATI Radeon HD 4200 (DX10.1) graphics engine and supports AMD's AM3 Phenom II, Phenom and Athlon processors. It also boasts HyperTransport 3.0 technology links, DDR2 memory and a PCI Express 2.0 graphics interface. The board also boasts Gigabyte's flagship 2oz copper PCB, which the firm reckons boosts performance whilst reducing system temperature. The specs up on PCcasegear also allude to an "Easy Energy Saver technology" which it claims helps "reach the maximum system performance" while saving power.

The GA-MA785GM-US2H (AUS$119) also integrates ATI's Radeon HD 4200 graphics engine and supports AMD's Phenom II quad-core processors, but also boasts dual channel DDR2 1200+ memory support, HyperTransport 3.0, PCI Express 2.0, ATI Hybrid graphics support and Gigabyte's "Ultra Durable 3" motherboard technology. The GA-MA785GPM-UD2H sports similar specs.

All the gigabyte boards have SB710 South Bridges - with ACC that can unlock some cores on certain three and even two core CPUs, but of course, AMD wouldn't want anyone to talk about that because not every CPU can be unlocked and there's no way of telling which CPUs can and can't. Still it's the reason SB710 and later South Bridges are such a big deal.

When it comes to Asus' AUS$155 offering, the M4A785TD-V Evo Motherboard, specs boast dual-channel DDR3 1333 memory support and reckons data transfer is accelerated up to 5200MT/s via a HyperTransport 3.0 based system bus. µ

The AMD 785G boards aren't set to be released until the last week of August and both Gigabyte and Asus are still purportedly under NDA, making it all rather interesting how boards have tipped up for sale before even having being launched. Then again, Gigabyte seem to have a habit of leaking new products well ahead of launch date and then delisting them a short time before, possibly in order to tweak people's curiosity.

A few boards from other firms have also tipped up on Chinese hardware sites, with Jetway's 785G MoBo here and Biostar's here.

Oh, and it appears that NewEgg is selling the boards now, too. µ

WHAT AMD SHOULD DO TO IMPROVE THEIR REVENUE AND BALANCE SHEETS.

1. They really needs new microprocessor products with new microarchitecture that beats Intel in performance/watt and clock to clock.
2. They needs to leave the current generation flip chip pin grid array socket to land grid array to boost the amount of pins.
3. They needs new marketing campaign that combined with TV advertising so averages Joe know there are another microprocessor company named AMD.
4. They needs more support from OEM for design wins that stressed in notebook/portable platforms.
5. They should going to use silicon grab path like Intel and VIA for one stop shop chip vendor.
6. They needs to encourage new investors for additional capital but not new debt.

@AMD supporter

1. How can it be done when Intel has 10x bigger R&D budget? AMD might get lucky if Intel slips some Pentium4 style design or they have their own TLB bug case.

Slightly Improved Gbyte Board

That board above is a slight improvement from mine only 3 things have changed HD3200 HD4200, DDR2 1066 1200 Support & slightly better sound.

My friend is after AM2/3 set-up and this board could be the one if the price is good I paid £70 for mine just before it went out of production mines the Gigabyte GA-MA78G DS3H AM2+ and it's a great board.

DRIVER

My Gigabyte Ga-MA690G Using Ati R690 has been retire driver support. I just buy a it about 2 year. Nvidia still support it Geforce 6 onboard motherboard, while AMD has been not support 690G since March? To make my point clear, just go to support driver in AMD. Choose Chipset Driver, Integrated Motherboard, X1250.

Number 3

In addition to number 3, in the first comment, the campaign should also include that AMD processors are NOT second rate.

What AMD also needs to do

What I have fund irritating with AMD is that their low power CPUs aren't available to the general (or interested) public and even if they are (as in the case of the mobile Barton) they are not really supported by mainboards.

I was looking to build a low power desktop system and tried finding either an Athlon 64 2000+ or the X2 low power versions. can one get them anywhere ? No.

So, even though I really do not want to have an Intel-based system, I will get an Atom 330 / ION based PC.

Too bad AMD are too stupid.

Mr

The P in the GPM section = sideport memory (graphics memory)

1) Just because Intel has a bigger budget, doesn't mean they can better innovate then AMD. Keep in mind that it's thanks to AMD that we have X86_64bit; True multi-core; Integrated memory controller system on CPU die. All technologies that Intel has from licensed from AMD to use in their own design.

AMD also has big partners that they work with, most notably IBM who helps AMD on a lot of things.

Though, on the whole TLB bug; Intel has had similar issues. Unfortunately, AMD doesn't have the same marketing budget as Intel... and can't spin things nearly as well, or cover them up.

Store Owner : Sorry, did you say GA-M3XI784NXC-UD4PH-X4A?

Customer : No. I said GA-M3XI78FNXA-UD3PH-X4X.

Store Owner : Oh sorry. I thought you said GA-M3XI784NXC-UD4PH-X4A. We don't carry GA-M3XI78FNXA-UD3PH-X4X.

Customer : Do you know where I could get a GA-M3XI78FNXA-UD3PH-X4X?

Store Owner : Er.. what was that again?
