WHILE THE REST of Asia's PC market is booming, US tinman Dell does not seem to be taking advantage of it.
Beancounters at IDC say that the worst effects of the economic slowdown may be over for Asia's PC market, but Dell is struggling to keep up.
Second-quarter PC shipments in the Asia Pacific, excluding Japan, rose eight per cent over the same period last year. IDC said that on a consecutive basis, shipments rose 19 per cent over the previous quarter.
But Dell's PC shipments remained flat, growing just 0.3 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2008.
The problem is that the surge is coming from consumers and not Dell's business clients. This means that Dell can't capitalise on the uptick.
Bryan Ma, director of personal systems research at IDC Asia-Pacific said that weak corporate sales were hurting Dell. He said that Dell was frantically trying to appeal more to consumers and has seen some success in this regard. However rivals were doing much better.
Lenovo's shipments rose 7.3 per cent and HP's increased by 25.1 per cent. If Dell is not careful Acer is about to overtake it in the rankings in Asia. µ
Well it is easy to see why they are not doing very well in this side of the world.
If you compared the prices of a Dell Latitude from the US website and the AUS website I think you will find a massive price difference.
I have just specified identical Latitude E4200 laptops
Dell US US$2,277
Dell AU AU$4,623 (US$3754)
Now that is a substantial difference in price more than than the extra cost of shipping which should actually be less or the same as they are assembled in Singapore.
Now why are Dell not doing very well in shipment figures? because they are ripping us off.
Corporations excluded, you'd have to be mad to buy a Dell as it is cheaper to buy a generic PC and they are usualy of a much higher quality anyway. Aussies and Asians in particular don't mind building stuff! As for the corporations, well they ain't upgrading now doh because of the recession.
Those Dell laptops are crazy in price for something that is made in China, compaired to other Chinese made lsptops.
I guess your paying for the phone support and warranty.
I wonder what it shall be like when the US dollar crashes? :) hopefully $20,000 for the very same lappy there and $2,000 here lol bring it on Timothy Geithner.
Maybe it's because they hate getting shunted to Indian tech support that they can't understand as much or even more than us Americans do!
Dell will keep losing market share because the company lost the cost advantage it had for many years. Their cost model is simply oldfashion.
Dell market share will keep shrinking and shrinking because the company is totally lost and doesn't invest in R&D at all....
We can see that Dell relies more on their corporate customers, who unfortunately now are feeling the recession worse. Also unfortunately for them it is harder to fool the general public where people actually take money from their own pocket to buy a computer, unlike those in the corporate areas where people might put money in their own pocket to buy computers. I pesonally stopped buying from Dell 5 years ago and I don't miss them.
all i can say is dell screwed over alienware customers.
I bought a Gateway and paid something like $1,800 six years ago. Then I found Newegg.com and realized just how badly I'd been ripped off. Since then I've built computers for my entire family and kept them upgraded. At the time, each one cost about 30% of what was offered by Dell, HP and others. Apple was never anywhere in site.
Just took a bit of learning and some trial and error and after a point I got requests from non family to build.
What always amazed me was the look on people's faces when they realized my computer was home built. Most thought I was fibbing...for real.
Oh well, a blind hog does in fact root up an acorn every now and then.
"I guess your paying for the phone support and warranty."
As a recent purchaser of a Dell laptop I have to comment that the main reason I purchased was the perceived quality of their warranty and customer service.
Having receieved a laptop with serious hardware issues (which was also different the specs I actually ordered) I have now spent a total of 8 hours on the phone to various Dell reps and still have not got a working laptop.
Next time I'll stick with Asus.
