Semiconductor industry 'worse than ever'

Semicon Pundits fear death of weakest firms
Thursday, 16 July 2009, 17:42

DESPITE PUTTING on a brave face at Semicon West, semiconductor industry pundits are afraid that the current recession will kill off some of its weaker firms, reports Inq sister website V3.

Upbeat financials from Chipzilla and predictions that the worst may be over from the soothsayers at Gartner have not been enough to brighten a gloomy outlook. Even Gartner reckons it will take a minimum of five years for demand to get back to 2007 levels.

While the complexity of chips is pushing up costs to the point where they are painful even for the deepest pockets, margins are being squeezed by constant pressure from OEMs competing for ever-smaller customer budgets.

Some pundits even reckon the industry is in the worst state it has ever been since it's birth over 50 years ago.

That's life

So? We're supposed to feel sorry about this? Demand will be what it is, and those that can't compete to supply, best find something else to do.

Nothing anywhere states that companies have a right to a profit. Or that people have a right to do whatever they want. You have the opportunity, but not the right.

Step Back In Time....

Think of Iron Forge, Learning to Smelt IRON TO TODAYS AUTOMOBILE. IT TAKES MILLIONS OF THINKERS & dOERS, JUST TO MAKE ALL THOSE SMALL STEPS OVER VERY LONG TIME. YEAH, YOU kNOW. REASON IS HARD TO UNDERSTAND, noone KNOWS WHAT IT WILL TAKE TILL ITS DONE.

Although parts seem small, its interconnection or switches that has More Interconnectable than auto parts. Times change rapidly in Computing. Literally computing is developing both hardware & software & method ALL at same time. Its Barn Storming Industry.

There is no way to skip step in developement. each step leads to next. Waste is Key result. So public thats could buy auto for same cost as computer, sees developed product compared to very experimental product. sales Slip as auto can make its money back, while computer is thin.

Think of building auto from scratch just to drive 60 miles in hour to place same as where You drove from? Not much of result & impossible task to complete. computing isn't even 1/2 mapped in hardware. Desktop Bicycle or computing home roadster, its gonnads take time.

Thanks for the caps, no caps cryptology... it helps to know when not to read time wasting posts.

get a life, put down your mouse and read a book.

To summerize, it takes preexisting knowledge to further invent. Rate Rapidly increases as knowledge base increases.

From 1993 to 2003 was less change in cpu than in these previous 6 years. Because as engineering works, further developement speeds up. known design & process.

Its NOT slowest in 50 years, its fastest developement & quickest lead in time, ever, for computing today. Mass Market is intested, its near foothold of reliability. Per $ invested, returns are greater than ever. that rate will increase as 2.4 additional transistors need be mapped for Ultee' 4.6 billion trannie Units. Tremendous change in next cycle or two, or three, maybe 4.etc.

Speaking of technological advancement

I think the Von Drashek bot got a major update in the last couple days. That was remarkably ungibberishy(if that's a word), and he managed to remain understandable in his follow-up post.

Unless of course, a language translation bot improved radically recently? Anybody know anything?

made some good points.

You just need to learn his language.

I think he may be an alien hitchhiker who lost his transmitter, but still has his book and towel ... so he is roughing it here on Earth.

He possibly does have two heads but we would be worse off without him.

I am still unsure what value he adds but that is the mystery I guess.

He posts his own blog at semiaccurate if your interested and sharptongue Charlie is also there if you still love NVidia and want to punish him.

I am there if you want some abuse or at THG if you want some help.

Neb did a good review on the V8 and V10 Coolermaster HSF's ... check them out here ...

Good work this week Inq team ... you can all keep your jobs.

end of line ...
I LOVE SYLVIE !!
