Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people - WC Fields
INTEL CEO Paul Otellini is flat out drumming up enthusiasm for a new category of computer which is halfway between a netbook and a laptop.
Otellini told CNET that inexpensive "ultra-thins" will give users what they're missing in netbooks.
An 'ultra-thin' is the best of both worlds for Chipzilla. They are cheaper to make than laptops but more profitable than netbooks.
They are basicallly low-cost laptops, typically with 13-inch screens, based on Intel's ultra-low-power chips. Lately we have been seeing Intel and Microsoft working together to prevent netbooks getting bigger than 11 inches and invading Intel's "ultra-thin" category.
Otellini said that ultra-thins address netbooks' shortcomings. He said when people try to play 3D games or run their office applications on netbooks, they tend to think they are slow.
If you want a thin and light notebook, you don't have to just pick a netbook. You can pick an affordable notebook that has more functionality, Otellini said.
The question as to whether Intel can succeed in establishing its new niche product is still open. Many analysts feel that it might work until Windows 7 comes out. Windows 7 runs well on a netbook or a laptop so a halfway-house product makes no odds.
The Intel CEO also said that netbooks may become increasingly popular as wireless 3G devices sold by telcos. But people who want more serious gear will have to buy better hardware. µ
The Niche Upwardly Mobile need a Veyron Specification with the Best of Everything Polished to Fit and Perform Prodigiously ...... and that is Prone to Human Error at the GUI. Which suggests a Better Beta Human Driver is all that is required for Prodigious Bountiful Change.
the 1st comment makes no sense to me...
of course it doesn't. you want to skip anything posted by amanfrommars and vondrashek/drashek. drashek doesn't write his name in the "name" field, it's hidden somewhere in his message. If you try to actually comprehend any of their messages, many of your neurons will die a painful death and you may lose your sanity.
"Windows 7 runs well on a netbook or a laptop so a halfway-house product makes no odds."
It's not whether the OS runs on netbooks. It's about the apps that people try to run on them. People didn't get the whole point of netbooks. They probably thought that suddenly the laptops have become so cheap. Of course it's not so. You still get what you pay for, only there's now an option to get a low-cost low-performing laptop, which wasn't available before. They try to run regular software on netbooks and then get disappointed by their performance.
I think ultra-thins may actually replace netbooks, as they hit the right performance and mobility ratio. Atom will probably go exclusively into the MID/smartphone space in a couple years. And I think Intel realize this too as they're targeting MID's with Moorestown.
yes, buy an 'ultra'-thin, which will have marginally less cubic displacement in your padded satchel (which you'll need since it probably wont be that rugged).
what's the point?
i bought a 701 to chuck in my normal bag for when i have to go on long trips or abroad. ultra thins i imagine will still have the same length/witdth specs as the laptop you have now so it'll still take up a fair amount of space... pointless no?
Funny there was no mention of the HP DV2 in the article... Not surprisingly Otellini made no reference to that but nor did INQ...
Oh well, looks like I got more choices when looking for a "ultra thin" now.
I don't get it. I keep seeing "real" notebooks pushing down into the netbook price range (like an acer 15.6" for $299.) So it doesn't seem like there is much room for an 'ultra-thin' market, pricing-wise at least.

If you have above average IQ and actually manage to read and understand vonDrashek's posts, you'll see that ,almost without fail, they have goods points to make. Don't speak ill of the master.
Now, this 'amanfromMars' dude is just a rookie; (s)he has a lot to learn from the true master.
Most people are going to buy what is cheapest. If the price of ultra-thins don't match netbooks then they'll merely compete with notebooks, not netbooks as Intel wants. Netbooks are selling because they are cheap, not because they are small.
+1 to Spence91, I don't see the point of taking the thickness of a notebook below about 3/8ths of an inch unless it's a side effect of making it lighter or work better.
Netbooks are called netbooks for a reason - You do EVERYTHING on the net. You want to do office stuff online, use Google Apps or MS's Azure platform or the multitudes of online apps.
Isn't the whole point of a netbook being small and portable? They should really stay at 10 inch with or without Wintel's blessing.
You know, I've tried everything there is and despite what the manufacturers claim, ultrathins just don't feel the same as the real thing. Oh wait, we're talking about laptops?
We had taken mistakes to put another category called netbooks.

crap written in a pretentious way to try and be trendy or "special".
Well I can tell you they are "special" alright.
At the end of the day, your fingers and hands are the same size, so who needs a laptop that thin, unless of course, they plan to lose in down the side of the sofa, or post it with a first class stamp without it being over size.
Other than that its just s playground "mine's thinner than yours" rubbish.
Who cares, a 10" netbook is a great size for the highly mobile user.
Why would you want a poppadom thin laptop with the comensurate fragility?
I can just see it now, calling back to the office "er boss, I need a new laptop as I just dropped mine down the gaps between the floorboards"
For a specialist, IMO, ultra is better. 42 twitter, a netbook is not a too expensive chewy thingy. Yo guys, the man is just a self-upgrading server, while some of the others here are net-books.

Who needs Ultra Thin? Well my girlfriend needs them, the advert for panty liners on the TV says so! I expect Intel's new line of CPU's to be named Tampax.
@amanfromMars
Go and have your Zoloft or whatever meds you are on, they clearly ain't working :)
If already so, up the dose to 250-350mg
