While racism is a huge problem in this country, the probability of an Indian being attacked is no greater than anyone else, they've just been successful at making a big fuss about the few that have.

To be fair, Indian students make up a substantial proportion of the passenger numbers on the Melbourne public transport network. Purely by virtue of its lower cost students in general are highly represented and this would include the +100,000 students of Indian origin that are currently living in Melbourne. On some lines to some parts of the city (based on personal experience) I would estimate Indian patronage numbers to be as high as 40%.

There is a larger problem of assaults and violent behaviour on the train network and in the areas surrounding some stations which affect the wider community and while being criminal, is not racially motivated. Like any large city, there a re just some places you avoid after dark.

I would be interested to see the official statistics for the proportion of assaults made against Indian students compared to their patronage levels on the transport system, I venture they would be quite close.

While there probably ARE isolated incidents of violence that can be traced to racial motives my gut feeling is that Indian passengers are simply being represented in the crime statistics at a rate proportional to their usage of the public transport system. However alarmist headlines are far better suited to selling newspapers.

I commute on the melbourne trains and yes there is a large majority of indian students. but it isnt the true blue aussies attacking these indian students.
its those fucking lebs and middle eastern young males attacking them, im not being racist here, cause its true. i see it all the time, they run rampant on the trains stealing phones and wallets and they think they are tough.

Australia is very multi-cultural. but out of all the races here, middle eastern people do not fit in.
they are racist themselves, irritable, violent and selfish. and its not the immigrant middle eastern people. its the sons of those.the second generation who get a western life but middle eastern rules who think its ok to rape women because she was in a mini skirt etc.

These wogs start gangs and in most of the stories about crimes it always:

As a true blue aussie myself, i would rather these indian and chinese students who work hard, cause no trouble, assimilate well. They add to the community compared to the spoilt young wog males who just take take take!

It might help to know that Australia has a somewhat odd arrangement for bypassing immigration queues. Turn up, pay some local crooks AUD20-40K for a cookery or haircutting course, do 900 hours of "unpaid" labour (if you're lucky---often, you pay *them*) in one of their mates' businesses, and you're in.

Of course, if you're poor to begin with and borrowed the first part of your payment at usurious rates, you end up working shitty late-night small-amounts-of-cash-in-hand jobs and living at the ends of the urban train network.

This "business" is worth AUD15B/year.

I'm white, big, and I've lived here all my life and *I* wouldn't walk home in the dark at midnight from those train stations. If I did, I'd expect to be assaulted too.

So forget racism, at least in this matter. There are violent bits of Australia's large cities, and it doesn't much matter what colour you are if you're afoot there at midnight.

Sure it's a problem, but i'm sure it always is in those sorts of areas.

I live in Norway, 99% of white norwegians will deny being rascist or that Norway is rascist. But ofcourse it is. We're keeping 'em down allright, you know, with "social" programs and the like.
