CONTROVERSIAL MOBILE PHONE directory service 118800.co.uk has crashed after thousands of users flocked online to remove their numbers.
Yes you read that right, it didn't crash out of popularity, but rather because people don't want their number to appear on it.
At the moment neither it nor its 'ex-directory' opt out system work. But don't panic, because regardless of whether you want to use the service or make sure you have nothing to do with it, a note on the 118800 website tells us that 'major improvements' to the service are underway.
"The 118 800 service for mobile phone connections is currently unavailable - from this website and by phone - whilst we undertake major developments to our 'Beta Service' to improve the experience for our customers," it says. "We'll be back as soon as possible with the new improved service. All ex-directory requests made by people in our directory to date are being processed. There will be no need to resend these requests. And we will take further ex-directory requests when the service resumes."
Surely this is the kind of early response to a new service that all firms dream of. It's just a shame that apparently it was the overwhelming crush of potential customers' opt-outs that bought it to its virtual knees.
Who woulda thunk it? µ
They only hold 11m numbers and NOT every number....
I almost ex-dir but if they don't have my number why should i give it to them?
I'll wait then ex-dir if need be
this is a victory for common sense
it is a sad fact of this modern era that many intrusive things are taking place without consent
i take solace in the fact that this company had to buy the numbers from 'other agencies' and this uproar just diminishes the potential profits more and more
I hope the ICO and law makers pick up on the public anger on this one. It is one matter for the home phone to ring with someone flogging double glazing or kitchens direct in the evening; but a completely different matter for unsolicited calls to come through to my teenage kids, or my business mobile.
Am I alone in expecting a greater sense of privacy for my mobile number than home or office land lines? The regulators have fallen asleep to allow this.
Just register your mobile (& landline) with the Telephone Preference Service (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/).
"It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so."
Nuff said innit!
But in the past couple of days I have had 3 calls with a withheld number. I don't often just get "Call" appear on my phone, as all my friends know I don't answer withheld.
If it happens again maybe I will answer it... If it is 118800 I will do my nut at TPS as my number has been registered with them for years.
I don't want my mobile number given out, as people are always trying to find out who I am!

This stupid 118800 site should be banned by the government(My MP is trying to get his number removed!)Although I understand that they will not give out you actual number they must still have to confirm which area you live in...or...??I do not want my violent, abusive ex husband to even know which county I live in!!!
I want my number off there system not just ex-directory. They have no permission from me to have my mobile number. They bought my mobile number from a third party to whom I gave my details in good faith. I do not want anyone to profit from my details whether it is the third party or the stupid 118800 who bought it from them.
Please you people out there do not be fooled by 118800…do your best to teach their likes a lesson.
Can someone confirm as I believe they dont actually give out mobile numbers, see here http://www.scribd.com/doc/19639348/118800
