Apple blames plastic for phone discolouration

It is not heat after all
Friday, 10 July 2009, 09:46

FRUIT-THEMED toymaker Apple has done a U-turn on why its Iphone toys keep changing colour in the heat.

Last week it told us that the toys could only operate in conditions so temperate that even customers in the UK could not use them at some times of the year.

However since it flogs a fair few phones in places that get cold or hot, the sales teams have advised the PR department to change tack.

According to CNET Apple has now told the world plus dog that the problem only relates to the white iPhone - it has nothing to do with the sealed battery getting too hot, it is just that the plastic used for the white casing discolours.

But Apple's statement creates more questions than it answers. Why does the white casing have problems now when it didn't in earlier models? Has Apple used cheaper materials? Does the black plastic just not show its heat-induced staining?

If the white phone is made of the same plastic as other white Iphones then is it discolouring because of the heat of the machine? Or some other reason?

These questions, and many others, have not been answered by the Apple press office. We guess it will stick to this line until a black phone discolours or catches fire. µ

It's the plastic

Iphone does not overheat. It's the plastic that is self-combusting.

Plastic Explosives

Who need C-4 when you got an Iphone.

Nonsense

Thats not what the CNET article says. If you cared to read it, Apple suggests its the case (as in 3rd party protective sleeves) that causes the (dis)colouration, not the plastic body itself. Im not a fanboy, just pointing out.

What the ...?

That CNET article you link to says NOTHING about the plastic used in the iPhone. It says it is caused by the *cases* that people put around the iPhone.

How did you create this article from their article? They're completely different!

More Inquirer nonsense

Where did Apple backtrack? Where did they say that the discoloration was caused by overheating and would be solved by keeping the phone cool?

There are two issues:
1. Like any other electronic device on the planet, there is a safe operating temperature range. Apple publicized what that range is for the iPhone. (or, more accurately, they updated their earlier recommendations to indicate that they apply to iPhone 3GS).
2. iPhone cases can discolor, apparently due to color being rubbed off from third party cases they're placed inside of.

The two items are not mutually inconsistent. Heck, they're not even related. So where do you get the nonsense that Apple is backpedalling or changing their story?

Is there any chance that the Inquirer will EVER do responsible journalism? Probably not.

Not Fruity's Fault

It does not matter what the Inq says, it's what Apple says.

Apple in no way takes blame for their faulty hardware, they always spin it in a way that blames the user's mental and/or physical (in)capacity. That's the way they work.

I am so glad that I'm of average intelligence and have opposable thumbs, otherwise I'd be an Apple Fanboi sheeping the Apple gospel.

Apple Fanbois will believe it

The Apple faitful would believe it if they were told the color change is caused by the phases of the moon. Obviously there is a desighn flaw or a substandard or cheapened material.
Two companies I no longer trust, Apple and Google.

Too funny...National Inquirer!

Supermarket headline and the article is not worth the time...

So....

To the Apple mind using cheap/faulty plastic is a better admission than using cheap/faulty batteries or electronics?

Oh well... A fanboy and his money are easily parted.

Temp

Surely if they are overheating it is easy enough to just feel the heat.
If the phones are being encased in another case it can affect the dissipitation of the heat.

Idiot

"We guess it will stick to this line until a black phone discolours or catches fire."

You guess lots of things. As often is the case, you're wrong. Your Apple biased holds no merit in the world of useful information so all of your articles are terrible. Get a new job because you're no good at this one.

Too bad this message will get deleted which is unfortunate for readers who are misled to believe your information is credible.

Don't dare to stain the holy apple name

I'm a Apple PR believer. I do believe in them as I believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny!
Of course Iphone discoloration has nothing to do with crappy material and scorching hardware. How can anyone don't have an air conditioner to use with their Iphones? Why take your iphone to the beach? To get sand on it?
I keep mine in the frigde and it works just fine! How can it be better than this? Knee down and plead St. Stevie for his forgiveness you infidel dogs!

Still reading this site

Things are going down rapidly at the inquirer. First Mike goes, then Charlie. Every time I've come to the inquirer lately I've been disappointed by this shoddy reporting. Other than salivating over Sylvie, is there any reason still to come read this junk?

apple has you in their pocket, eh?

How much does Apple pay you guys for these 'reports'? Whatever it is, they're certainly getting their money's worth. You have the perfect mix between 'angry' and 'inaccurate' to make people believe that all this ragging on Apple is caused by jealousy or something -- in any case, certainly not by anything bad Apple has done.

I know this isn't the case from many years of experience. I know that Apple is one of the most arrogant computer company I have ever dealt with. But YOU are not convincing anyone of this. In fact, you're making ME look silly for saying such things. So again, what is Apple paying you?

Cases

The consensus seems to be:
- This iPhone runs hotter than the last one, perhaps too hot.
- Protective cases trap in the heat and make the problem worse.
- Some of those protective cases can stain the iPhone when they get hot.

So, it is a problem for Apple. The iPhone shouldn't get so hot, and they should have warned case manufacturers about the potential issue. But it's not a huge problem, nor a unique one. Many other smartphones have a habit of getting uncomfortably warm during use too.

INQ fanboys

You know, when we like a news site, we read it now and again. When we like it very much, we read it everyday. But when we absolutely love it, we not only read it but also comment on it.

So I must assume that you all can't help but love INQ. And when you criticize it so much, well that's a big irony.

Just admit.

My 3GS doesn't get that hot

I've got a jailbroken iPhone 3GS and it never gets hot- not even when used for prolonged periods outside. . . I also get great battery life (5 hours or so of web browsing, 11 hours of talk time). It sounds to me like an isolated issue, or third party cases which trap heat inside.

All the Apple hatred around here belies a great amount of jealousy over what the company has been able to accomplish. Due to having a superior product and superior business model, Apple has MS, LG, Blackberry, etc on their heels and trying furiously to catch up. What other app stores are there? Where else can I get a cool drum machine, four track recorder, the latest games, etc on my cell phone?

After laughing off the iPhone 2 years ago, Ballmer is eating his words as Apple now has a bigger slice of the market than all Windows CE devices COMBINED! And a recent MS developer said, after the iPhone 3GS was introduced:

"I read the specs on the iPhone 3G S," one Microsoft developer recent wrote, "and realized it has already surpassed the thing we're trying to do that won't ship for a large number of months.""
