Would you know a bottom if you saw one? - Kevin Delaney, WSJ
APPLE KOREA has agreed to recall some of its Ipod Nanos in the wake of recent consumer complaints about the batteries in the MP3 players.
The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards said in a statement that on June 25 it asked Apple Korea to recall its first generation Ipod Nanos following a series of complaints about batteries overheating or exploding.
Apple Korea claimed that the batteries used in new Ipod Nano's don't explode, but said if punters are worried they can get new ones.
Apparently the white and black plastic players have a tendency to overheat, swell up, and possibly burst into a nasty chemical fire. There have been four formal consumer complaints made between December and June.
The problems seemed to be caused by batteries made by the Chinese company ATL. Initially, Apple agreed to replace faulty units upon request by the consumer as it did in Japan.
However, the statement implies that Apple will now recall the players under its own initiative. µ
I'm kind of surprised Apple would agree to do a recall, even a limited one, so late in the game seeing that the 1st gen iPod Nano was released almost 4 years ago and would no longer be covered even by extended warranty.
I hope this happens to allot more of their hardware, especially their new laptops. Maybe then Apple will pull their heads out and quit putting non removable, non user replaceable batteries in all their stuff.
It seems every failure and recall is due to outsourcing to the Chinese.
Are they really that incompetent or are they sabotaging stuff on purpose?
There's a big long list of companies that have been put out of biz or almost put out of biz due to massive Chinese defects.
It's not the fault of the Chinese. It might be comforting for those of us in the West to think of our competitors as inferior craftsmen or just lacking the intelligence to do a good job, but that's a delusion. The Chinese are perfectly capable of quality work (the Trans-Continental rail-road springs to mind).
The problem is Western companies who are willing to accept shoddy, half-assed products to increase their profit-margins. More reputable firms regularly inspect factories where their products are made to ensure quality standards are maintained. Those firms who merely want to line their pockets don't do these inspections properly, if at all.
You get what you pay for when it comes to outsourcing. Unfortunately, most corporations want to spend as little as possible, and while the consumer is perfectly content to spend huge sums of money on something with an "Apple" sticker on it, they'll see no reason to change their ways.

Warranty doesn't mean squat if there is a possible Class Action lawsuit against them. At least they are been 'seen' to be doing something.
