O2 gets the Palm pre

As predicted last week

TELEFÓNICA HAS CONFIRMED it will be the purveyor of the Palm Pre mobile phone in all its glorious wonderment – as we reported five days ago.

What actually added to the rumour’s merit was the uttering of the company line “we can neither confirm nor deny the rumour”, which just added to the confirmation when we spoke to both O2 and Palm.

All we know at this point is that the Pre is due out before Christmas, that’s as much as both companies are saying at the moment with no further details of tariffs or costs.

Of course, now O2 needs to work up a really attractive tariff for the Pre so as not to compete with the Iphone.

"We can't help feeling Telefonica has scored something of an own-goal," said Tony Cripps, principal analyst at market-watcher Ovum. "Palm would have been better off with a European telco that isn't already beholden to Apple.

"For one thing, the two devices will be competing for the same customers. For another, the Iphone is more than a mere poster child for applications on phones and handset integration with the web: it's the benchmark," added Cripps.

The press briefing today for this announcement was strictly controlled: we couldn't video the device, photograph it or even touch it. But it looked real enough from a distance. µ

NOOOOOO!!!!!

If Palm go with O2 exclusively with the Pre, they might as well never ship the device in Europe. It will be like the console wars of old - go into a shop and all the assistants will be able to talk about is the iPhone. The Pre will get left on the shelf as consumer after cinsumer is persuaded they really want the iPhone - 'coz it's betterer' The Pre will go the way of the Sega Dreamcast if the go exclusively with O2 - their best option is to put it on every network and go for market saturation.
