Opera defends against security concerns

CEO says Unite is safe
Tue Jul 07 2009, 10:48

OPERA's CEO has been telling the world plus dog that the Unite feature of the forthcoming Opera 10 browser is not an automatic invitation to break into people's PCs.

Jon von Tetzchner claims that the decentralised nature of Unite, which turns a PC into a web server by putting that capability in the browser, makes it more difficult for hackers to break into computer systems.

Speaking to IDG von Tetzchner said that, when you're hacking a single system, if you have everything that belongs to everyone in one location, you only need to break in once.

However if the data is stored on different computers it's a little more complicated, he claims. If you get into one web server and everyone's data is in there, then that's easier than getting into a million computers.

Von Tetzchner said the fear that hackers will have a field day with Unite has more to do with it being a new and unproven technology about which security risks are an unknown, rather than a real danger with the technology.

Opera Unite includes a web server in the browser that connects it to an Opera proxy server, which then allows the browser to serve content to the rest of the Internet.

The idea is to simplify things for people who want to host their own web pages and share files with others via the Internet. It means that they don't have to configure firewalls or worry about their Internet service providers blocking web server traffic. µ

Try Opera

I'm using Opera 9.64 (latest) and I think it's pretty good. I ditched Firefox and am willing to try this for a few more days.

It's easy to use, intuitive, and the niftiest feature is the Speed Dial. Heck I don't even need to type the webpage address. I think Google Chrome also has a similar feature, but hey, Opera does it quite well. Sad so see Opera has very little market share. I hope Opera gains ground.

Doesn't say no firewall

@Jason

The article doesn't say you don't need a firewall. It says the feature works withtout needing to modify your existing firewall.

Gormless

@Kaos909 - Your comment is completely irrational. This is a tool for you to share files. If you have none to share and aren't using it, what's the problem? That's like me refusing to use Opera because it also has an RSS reader and I don't use RSS.

@Jason - Who said you don't need a firewall? You made that irrelevance up on the spot.

Willing to try Opera

It's good to see we have 5 competing web browsers. This is even better than the days when we only had IE and Netscape bashing each other's brains out.

Competition breeds innovation. Don't bash Opera for trying to innovate. It's free. Stop whining. Take it or leave it.

It is not obligatory

Yo, Kaos909

No-one forces you to enable Unite on Opera 10. It is just a possibility, if you need this.

My PC is not your server

Regardless of the spin put on this technolgy I like many others brought a PC not a server....

Do they plan to pay me for the bandwidth used? NO.

Will I be using it? NO

Will I tell everyone I know to stay clear of this? YES

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
