US cyber security system project is troubled

Einstein can't sort it out
Fri Jul 03 2009, 12:01

THE FLAGSHIP project to protect the US government's computer networks from cyberspies has gotten bogged down by technical limitations and privacy concerns.

The Wall Street Journal claims that the latest version of the system, known as Einstein, won't be fully installed for 18 months.

This is seven years after the first version was rolled out, but that only raises the alarm after a cyber intrusion has happened. It does nothing to protect any computer systems.

If the government's insecurity boffins design something better, it will likely trip over privacy concerns, which could delay its rollout further.

AT&T, which would test the system, sought written assurances from the Justice Department before it agreed to participate, because it doesn't want to be sued by anyone who might believe their personal information has been obtained illegally or their liberty has been threatened.

Einstein was supposed to be designed in three phases. The first monitors Internet traffic flowing in and out of federal civilian networks and detects abnormalities that might be cyber attacks. If there is an attack it tells someone who is supposed to do something about it.

The next phase is supposed to detect viruses and other indicators of attacks, based on signatures of known incidents, and alert analysts immediately. It won't be able to block attacks either.

In the final phase Einstein is supposed to detect and deflect security breaches. However to do that its filtering technology will have to read the contents of emails and other Internet communications.

Einstein was supposed to cost $2 billion and was promoted to offer some protection for all non-military federal government computers.

US President Barack Obama is now re-examining plans for developing the third iteration of Einstein in order to review its privacy protections and likely effectiveness, the WSJ says. µ

Cyber

They tried to protect Microsoft Windows and Unix boxes, while hp outsourced OpenVMS Engineering to India. Almost as funny as the "cyber" talk in DC.

Running Man Secured Heart Attack!

There was a time when you could have intercepted snail mail, the pony express stopped by arrows and bullets, the mail man? Dogs. Not today, e-mail is faster than bullets, pinpoint delivery like arrows, giving any running mail-man death just attempting to race the web.

Speed indeed... Kills! Speed was in the 1950's a requirement for the nuclear age, getting the system the fastest, the first to destroy the enemy. Year, yes years went by, just for the intelligence agencies to conclusively admit the situation was truly a two way street, a madness towards futile counter measures.

The web is no different, even if you never ever touched the web, at all, many people in that category found their info is among the cyber revelations.

The internet to myself at least, has proven a logical conclusion: We are all connected, no matter how disconnected you may want to be, the only way to absolute independence is after the SHOCK... The PAIN... Like a heart attack, is death. Sad but true.

Oh, by the way there are web sites out there with obituaries and death certificates. Modern day grave robbing, sort a speak.

For all those who are aware that everything that needs to be invented is already invented, it would be true to further elaborate upon the above quote and share ...... Einstein = Skynet = Temporal Knights.

And that is a Lineage with a Rich Memorial Source Lode/Binary Source Code completely Unknown and QuITe Alien in the Extreme Western Gene Pool of Uncle Sam.

And that in turn suggests that the East has All the Future Lead Intelligence in any Great Game Plays/Scenarios, with the West simply being a Valuable Provisional Host, Learning the Valuable Ancient Ropes of Civilisation Control?

Indeed, most very recent political developments would bear out the analysis, with Uncle Sam courting Partners in order to Survive and Prosper both at Home and Abroad, and that shows an Intelligence when it is True, which is both Surprising and Encouraging, given the previous Neanderthal Administrative Trade Offerings.

Fun With News

@ Big Dave

I do not take sides politically, I take sides on factual news, plus I do not believe anybody is a bastard, that word is just used as a simple classification label excuse without solving anything really.

Orphans is a better classification, I think for anybody lacking authority figures not being present or dead and where people are known or supposed to help them.
