Blind hacker gets 11 years

For hacking and harassing
Tuesday, 30 June 2009, 11:18

A BLIND Boston teen has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for hacking into the telephone network and harassing the Verizon investigator.

According to PCW, Matthew Weigman, 19, was part of a group of telephone hackers that met up on telephone party lines.

The court heard how Weigman was known as "Little Hacker". He started breaking into phone networks aged 14.

His favourite afternoon was spent using spoofing technology to make it appear like an emergency call was being made from a victim's house. The idea is to harass their targets, preferably by having Inspector Knacker of the Yard (or Precinct) show up at their door with guns.

One of the group spoofed an attack and told dispatchers that he was holding hostages and had killed family members with an AK47 while high on drugs.

Weigman was given the longest sentence of the group. This was partly because he showed up at the home of a Verizon investigator who had been building a case against the group to scare the bejesus out of him.

Quite how threatening a blind bloke can be, prosecutors didn't say. We suppose if he had a dog it might be another matter. µ

Give them more

Prank calls are one thing, but pranking the dispatchers for EMS and the Police? Like they don't have enough trouble in large cities responding without half of them being called off for a fake hostage situation.

Sounds about right

I remember once getting a call regarding a faulty monitor and being told it was urgent because the user was blind, No I didn't ask

Mr

Note that only 4% of registered blind people are *totally* blind (that's the figure in the UK). It's not unusual that a registered blind person has tunnel vision or partial sight and can actually function quite well in a number of situations needing some sight.

..Many registered blind people can even use computer monitors to read text like any other normal person. /sarcasm off/

Hacker, my arse!

That's it.. continue the abuse of the lingo of the subculture in best BBC ignoramus tradition.

"Hacker"??

"PHREAKER" is the word you were looking for.

But what a crazy sentence. A erm "mentally challenged", immature, and disabled kid of 19 gets 11 years? Sure, SWATting is Very Bad..

Maybe if he'd had few good smacks when he was younger things would have worked out differently..

<sigh Crazy world we live in.

Better excuse than Gary's

Well, being blind is better than Gary McKinnon's lame "Asperger's syndrome" excuse.

But they're still excuses.

Throw the book at him.
