Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer is close to knocking Dell off the number two spot in global PC sales, according to a report in The New York Times.
Figures from IDC showed Acer increasing market share 3 per cent to 10.9 per cent last year, while Dell pretty much stood still only gaining 0.1 percent to reach 15 per cent.
And the gap is getting narrower. Acer grabbed an 11.6 percent share of worldwide sales in the first quarter of this year, while Dell has 13.6 per cent.
If Acer succeeds it will be the first non-US company to hold the No2 spot. µ

I really like my Acer Aspire One 10" netbook and am thinking of getting another one when they finally support Linux properly. I installed Fedora 10 on it shortly after I received it and have recently updated it to Fedora 11.
I would REALLY like to see them come out with an ARM based Linux offering using one of the high res displays from PixelQI... That would be AWESOME... In the meantime my "normal" notebook mainly collects dust while the little Aspire One goes with me on most trips...
I have an Acer Aspire One 10 and it rocks indeed, a wonderful machine, very portable, potent and with good looks.
