IT SEEMS that the 'piracy' watchdog Nexicon has found a fresh revenue stream threatening people it thinks could be filesharing.
Nexicon started out life flogging cigarettes but changed tack when it was caught flogging the killer weed to kiddies and forgetting to log sales with the tax office.
According to Torrentfreak, it has decided there is more cash to be generated by clobbering peer-to-peer file sharers instead, which it seems to be doing very well at.
Nexicon monitors BitTorrent swarms and other filesharing networks and records the IP addresses of those people who share the copyrighted work of its clients. Nexicon's software sends an automated email to the ISP linked to the IP-address with a request to forward it to the associated customer.
The email contains a threat of legal action if the alleged filesharer doesn't choose to settle at $10 a tune or film within 10 days.
In short, if you don't pay, Nexicon threatens to bankrupt you in court. Presumably, people will just pay up to make the problem go away.
However the only client who appears to be working with Nexicon is the late Frank Zappa.
The MPAA has said it is not working with Nexicon and that it is no longer using litigation against filesharers, prefering to work with ISPs. µ
That's cheaper than buying the DVD or Blu-Ray. Perhaps I'll take up some file sharing...
...who could resist. Let me legally download a movie in blue-ray quality without DRM or copy protection for that price and you have me as a buyer!
I think you guys realize, they are essentially scamming people and do not represent any rights holders(excepting the late Frank Zappa apparently, who controls his works now?).
Would it be illegal if I were to send out a few thousand letters demanding $10 on the off chance people will just pay me to go away too? :)
