SUPPORTERS OF IRAN'S President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who recently was announced to have won an election before many of the votes had even been counted, have been hacking into US websites.
Hackers defaced the home page of the Oregon University System, posting a message telling President Barack Obama to mind his own business and stop talking about the disputed Iranian election.
Talking about Iranian elections in the US is apparently what is leading to riots in the streets of Iran. While Iran's young and IT literate people have mostly been supporting Mir Hossein Mousavi's so-called 'green revolution' protests against the election result, it seems that Ahmadinejad's supporters included a few hackers too.
But for some reason they thought attacking the University of Oregon would bring the US to its knees, so we don't think that the brightest hackers in Iran are on Ahmadinejad's side.
Attempts to access the university system's website were automatically redirected to another page, where readers viewed a message said to be from Iran that claimed there was no cheating in the election.
The fact that their man was reported to have won overwhelmingly in regions where most people would prefer to gut him and stuff his body with figs before setting it on fire was just a quirk of democracy, apparently.
That message was up for 90 minutes before university system technicians fixed the problem. The attack exploited a flaw in some third-party software that had not been properly updated.
The text, in red on a black background, called on US President Obama to focus on his own country's economic crisis instead of commenting on the Iranian election. µ
Abbacus from the ancient persia is a little triky to handle...They could only do that...
Also they have wrote a virus, asking politelly to wipe out yourself all the data on your HDD, because is a 3rd world country virus....
Iranians need to read some Hitchens or just face up to the fact that Religion is a load of balls.
Atheism FTW.
He ran, for the president of Iran
we ran together to a tropical island
my man, Mahmoud is known for violence
smiling, if he can still do it then I can
they call you weasel, they say your methods are medieval
you can blame the Jews I can be your Jim Caviezel
TheInq is turning from yellow to orange, or is it red already?
Nick, I think you being a Briton eliminates your right to make any judgments on Middle Eastern politics, nor decide on whether democracy-a-la-UK is the right regime for Iran. The democracy as it is viewed in the UK and in Middle East are really different notions, believe me. Shall we go back to how that democracy is being establhed in Iraq? I bet you never asked people there whether they'd prefer living in relatively-peaceful-and-predictable state under Saddam regime or being bombed every day under US control, did you?
Europe and Taiwan are not the only places in the world - travel more around Middle East and ask what people who actually live there think about all this geo-politics, before voicing such opinins.
Iranian Hackers who we supportive of the outcome, Hack US computer to say election result was not hacked.
Well I am convinced!
@ Rustam-the-King
You sir have obviously misunderstood the concept of "democracy". We are all entitled to our opinions. We can think what we want & say it. Freedom of speech.
Nick & practically everyone can voice an opinion about Iran. About what we think of Iran and our beliefs regarding the election in Iran.
As long as we are not being racist/abusive etc, there is no reason not to allow people to express their views.
For instance, I think that the islamic revolution is proof that religion has nothing to do with god. Would go want muslims to kill muslims? I don't think so... maybe some of these so called "politicians" & "leaders" etc in Iran are really full of shit...think it over.
Peace, love & atheism.
The silly thing about the Internet is that some pimply faced twelve year old hacker in BRAZIL can deface a web site in the United States AND post all sort of Iranian crapola... and the world says " ooooooh the Iranians have attacked the US... " Bullocks.
Heck, it could even have been some University of Oregon student, sitting in the computer labs at the University who did the 'hacking' - while cleverly hacking himself some new grades - and the defacement merely being a distraction to redirect the blame for the University hacking.
The reason I don't think the Iranians did it... is because the vast majority of computer literate Iranians support the democratic movement in their country.
.
@ Rustam:
"relatively-peaceful-and-predictable state under Saddam"
Relatively peaceful meaning savagely repressed, any time anyone stuck their head up it got chopped off.
Predictable? When you could be at home and be stormed by Saddam's minions because he or his sons took a fancy to your wife or daughter? Then be executed if you dared to speak out against it?
Are you libtards that degenerate that you would choose "peace" and "predictability" at the price of being ruled by a degenerate, corrupt, perversion of a man and his evil spawn with absolute authority over your life and death? How very sad...
And we, the U.S. don't have anywhere near enough bombers to carpet bomb the entire country of Iraq every day, so your assertion that Iraq is bombed every day is silly and ignorant of truth.
Rustam: Just another silly, ignorant libtard running around demonstrating his uselessness.
Rustam-the-King, I think you being from country X eliminates your ability to make judgements about Nick's ability to make judgements about someone else's ability to make judgements about the middle east.
See what I did there?
Everyone has the right to form their own opinions, and in most places they can share them w/o fear of much more than being snarked at by commenters.
Well, the US would know about dodgy voting wouldn't they?
While I don't really sympathise with the current Iranian president I do have some sympathy with one of the previous comments: most people in the US and UK have got no idea about politics or day to day life in the Middle East.
How would we know about dodgy voting in the US? We have the oldest persistent democracy in the Western world. Unless, of course, you're referring to the oft-criticized Bush-Gore Presidential election in 2000. But, in that care, you would be showing your own ignorance of the electoral college system her in the US. Bush won the majority of votes in the Florida election; as such, he was the legitimate winner and President-elect. Other than that, I really have no clue what you're talking about with your 'dodgy' voting.
Now, as for the good people of the UK and the US being ignorant of Iranian politics, that statement is patently absurd. While it is true that we may not understand every nuance of the politic situation in the Middle East, and in Iran in particular, in truth, no particular knowledge is necessary. To be outraged with the suffering of the Iranian people, and, by extension, be outraged at the Iranian Gov't, one need only be a thinking and feeling human being.
Here are three reasons to be outraged with the current state of Iran, any one of which is sufficient to justify the interests of the West, both individually and collectively:
1) Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God";
2) From a non-theistic, moral perspective, there is Kant's Categorical Imperative, "[All people] are ends unto themselves." Simply put, there is considerable suffering there, so it is our duty to care;
3) And, from an economic perspective, Iran controls a significant amount of the material wealth and natural resources in the Middle East; it's political instability would be an economic disruption during already troubled times, and the unstable government would beget further instability in the whole region.
Pick your poison, Matt. Any way you look at it, no matter how ignorant we may be of particulars, all of us must care!
Nick,
Just remember that Mousavi announced that he had won the election an hour BEFORE Ahmadinejad. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/13/world/middleeast/13iran.html
Had Mousavi won, would he been criticized in like manner for announcing victory too soon?
Actually, The Supreme Court decided the 2000 election. The case is Bush v. Gore.
Had all the votes in Florida actually been counted, Gore would have been the President!
Then there are the voting irregularities in Ohio in 2004. There is a strong case that has been made that Kerry was the rightful winner.
And I find it particularly ironic for a bush adherent to offer a quote from Jesus, "Blessed are the peacemakers..." The hundreds of thousands of people slaughtered in Iraq would be hard pressed to consider bush a peacemaker. I'm also pretty sure that Jesus would be against homicide by torture that resulted from your Dear Leader's torture program.
King George II was anointed by the Supreme Court and went on the become one of the most heinous war criminals in history. Would you like to tour the bush torture and rape rooms?
George Bush killed more Americans than Osama Bin Laden with his unnecessary war on Iraq. There's over-whelming evidence that he tortured more people than Saddam!
Don't worry, rest of the world, we're trying to excise republican extremists from our American political system. Better days are ahead of us. Promise.
@ cybersaur
" Had all the votes in Florida actually been counted, Gore would have been the President! "
Legally they were, and the supreme court affirmed this. If you don't believe the supreme court, then I guess everything they have ever rulled on doesn't count either. I agree that the 2000 election was close, and probably decided on a technicality, which is a hell of a lot different than the landslide corruption in Iran.
Would we have been better off if we didn't have a seated president (kinda like the current Coleman, Franken thing) during 9/11? In a race that is that close, they should just make the first best effort and call it. If it was obvious, like in Iran, with more than 100% turnout in some places (dead people can't vote!) there was corruption, then recount or revote etc.
"There's over-whelming evidence that he tortured more people than Saddam!
Don't worry, rest of the world, we're trying to excise republican extremists from our American political system."
What? I call bullshit on this statement.
Saddam was in power for more than 20 years and tortured tens of thousands of people. He even kept shelves of documentation about it. Pictures and everything.
There is no overwhelming evidence that Bush has tortured anywhere near that number of people.
Who are planning this digital poltical and mediatic compaign against the only fair election in islamic world make illusions i wonder if they were serious about this plot the are waiting millions of dollars in binaries 01 are they serious!I think they must be subject of investigation for wasting public money in the USA.
The world is more complicated than the digital.
What is really the problem with Iran?the problem is that Iran MUST not obtain the nuclear weapon which threat the american interests and second Iran must stop supporting the lebanese and palestinian resitance xhich making noise to the israelies.
If Najd fullfills these two condtions by letting surveillance cams to the nuclear sites and than will be easy to be bombarded by americans and stopping resitence supporting He will be in the western:The most reformist, moderated, liberal, democratic man in the islamic world THAT is ALL!!!
I amke question to the iranian who make demonstrations:Are you serious about your action what are you waiting from the USA and western you canonly wait from them a blood bath like iraq from 2003!
Did you see that americans themselves are looking for solution to their domestic problems economic, social more badly the americains are destroying what their parents have built Who is responsble for the banckruptcy of the biggest companies and losing thousands of jobs So think twice
Although it is illegal and disruptive, I semi-sort-of-eh-not-exactly-but-slightly support this attempt at communication.
The last time I remember someone communicating with me locally is when two huge towers fell and killed thousands of people. I rather enjoy this sort of "free" speech!
The message is polite, it is based on a very rational possibility, and it using a college forum. I would guess the educated and polished people known as Iranians are feeling the immense pressure of desparation. This is actually troubles me deeply.
Although countries may be considered "middle east", they vary greatly in culture, maturity and intellectual advancement. The people Iran should not be dismissed in any fasion.
- yup
@Ryan: It's a republic, not a democracy. Do you understand the difference?
@ Rich Wargo:
I guess you must have hated George W Bush then considering he spied on you with the help of AT&T, locked away U.S. citizens (Habeus wot?) without trial, invaded the wrong country (oops) killing thousands, and most laughable of all, failed to ever catch a guy living in a cave. Face it, the conservative movement consists of 14 year olds like you and 70 year old dinosaurs. LOL @ you buddy.
Not based in Iran. Just America-hating stooges with an affinity for totalitarianism.
Just a bunch of America-hating script kiddies who support Basiji militiamen using axes to chop up peaceful, unarmed student demonstrators.
The Iranian regime is tightening control on the internet to stop students from communicating with each other and the outside world. Do you think the regime is going to let a bunch of script kiddies in Iran hack into American computers? Not this week.
The reason they attacked a university is because they were just a bunch of script kiddies hoping to get something the Gov would pay attention to.
If they were "hackers" as you called them, then they would have taken something like cnn.com.

Fund both sides of the conflict, and make sure your projected winner
gets the best funding.
Then again, Iran is today capable to send a whole team of its hackers
into battle. If things go bad, Iran will face the same dire
consequences of economic embargoes like Iraq had to face over a period
of over 10 years, before Bush coward finally felt safe to invade. These
Salon hacker fights won't be possible anymore then.
Iran will, like Iraq, then have become a pauper nation with starvation
and foreign national mercenaries who like hyena's will terror Iran as
dressed-up insurgents.
Moussavi was the one who first declared victory long before vote counting was finished.
Not Ahmadinejad. His declaration came after.
Do your homework, Inq.
Wow where to begin. There is a whole lot of stupid on this page.
First off Id like to say as an American I think we need to stay out of Irans bussiness. They pose absolutely no military threat to us, just like Iraq, just like N. Korea. This CIA supported rebellion in Iran supporting a Nationalist with ties to terrorism in the 80s is just one more stupid thing my country is doing in the middle east. When will we learn that the enemy of my enemy is not my friend, I mean it worked so well with binladen and hussein.
With that said I'd like to quote "Are you libtards that degenerate that you would choose "peace" and "predictability" at the price of being ruled by a degenerate, corrupt, perversion of a man and his evil spawn with absolute authority over your life and death? How very sad..." I'm going to make an assumption and guess you support the wholesale executive branch power grab and violation of the rule of law that Bush started after 911 and Obama now continues. You sir are a moron, foreign wars always limit liberty here at home. Ben Franklin said (paraphrasing) " Those who give up a little permanent liberty for a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Even if the Civil rights abuses of the recent republicrats succeded in preventing terrorist attacks, were the lives of those we would have lost really worth the freedom of a nation. I ask you, is life so dear or peace so sweet?
And the so called Liberals (If you guys are done with that label can we have it back) are just as bad. They just have different reasons for beleiving its their right to enslave their brothers and sisters.
OK I'm out of time, but I'd like to state that yes I know there are gramatical errors, and spelling mistakes in my post. I'm stuck at work and in a hurry.
Flame away if you like, but unless you can actually argue your points your insults mean nothing.
you idiots obviously don't understand the difference between an individual stating they believed they won and the election authority announcing a winner. learn to think before you post again.
and Gil, while I generally appreciate your comment for it's merits, you seem to miss the point on North Korea and Iran being threatening to the US and our interests. A truly threatening North Korea risks China becoming involved in large scale warfare to quell any risk of refugees from North Korea flooding the Chinese borders and ports, as well as giving Indian and Pakistan a reason to want to blow each other up. Also, a threatening Iran, unlike the non-threatening Iraq, threatens to further destabilize the region due to Israeli tensions and the whole Georgia v. Russia standoff. Basically, we don't need to do anything to light these fuses, but any of these various powder kegs exploding could lead to large scale war like we have never seen, and that's not good for anybody except Cheney and the rest of the world's military-industrial complex.

“His staff started mouth-to-mouth and an ambulance was called which got there in eight minutes “But found he was in full respiratory arrest, no breathing and no pulse. They started full CPR
