Cop data systems need to be open sauce

Top cop calls for Linux
Wednesday, 24 June 2009, 14:19

ONE OF THE UK'S top cops has called for police data systems to be based upon open sauce software.

Ian Readhead, director of information for the U.K. Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), told a Unisys security event that emergency service data transferal systems should use open source, to help make sure they all work together properly.

He told ZDNET that the future might not be about licencing different proprietary products and there will be a need for compatibility.

UK coppers run a pick and mix of systems running proprietary and open source software, he said. For example, the Holmes 2, or Home Office Large Major Enquiry System, which is a police database, runs on both Linux and proprietary systems.

While software systems will converge, Readhead said there was no need to have a single supplier. µ

President Urinated Upon By Monkey.

Where Are Police When You Need Them? Coding Software? UNLIKELY.

In Rearrangemnet of Protocols, Today Mere Monkey Got Last or at least, Most PressWorthy of Event In:
A monkey urinated on Zambian President Rupiah Banda as he spoke to reporters outside his State House offices on Wednesday.
"You have urinated on my jacket," a startled Banda told the monkey, one of many that makes their home in the trees
So Do Cops on Assignment. Never Mentioned if it be Female Monkey, Eh Mr. President. Ahso, How About Drug Test On That Pee.
Actually, Learning Coding be best thing for Cops with Out of Control Feeling towards Others. Its HARD KNOCK LIFE.

Can't see this happening, somehow...

The key point with open source software that Mr. Readhead fails to make, is that you will need some very skilled people in charge of your computer systems - and they will cost money.

To use open source, you not only need to be an administrator - you need to be a developer, too. Sometimes, just getting the damn packages to compile can be a life's mission.

I guess we will wait until they find out how much it costs to hire the necessary staff to go from Windows to open source, and they'll be begging for Microsoft to come back...
