Intel, Nokia exchange wedding vows

Companies commit to always-connected computing devices
Tuesday, 23 June 2009, 19:56

CHIPZILLA AND CELLZILLA announced today they have established a "long term relationship" to develop new mobile computing devices based on an Intel Architecture computing device and chipset.

In a conference call today Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior VP and general manager of the ultra mobility group and Kai Öistämö, Nokia executive VP, devices - confirming a prior report - stated that their companies have a lot to offer each other, and development of the holy grail of mobile computing is forthcoming.

You can kiss the bride, now...

Per the agreement, Nokia will license 3G and HSPA technology to Intel giving it the components it needs to deliver the technology, all the while working on new concept designs, materials and displays. Just who is giving what to who is unclear, though. This deal will enable the companies to deliver fully wireless all-in-one broadband computing devices capable of WiMAX, Wi-Fi, 3G and HSPA communications. This "always connected" concept has driven Intel's Ultra Mobility Group for the past couple of years, with the company constantly attempting to move in on ARM territory.

"Open source" and "standards-based" were also thrown around quite a bit in the conference call but, ultimately, no details were given regarding the level of co-operation or even a timeline for the delivery of a first concept product. However, with both companies committed to this, we can imagine they can do it quite fast.

The agreement will also birth a new software development community specifically tailored to Intel's Moblin OS and Nokia's lesser-known Maemo OS used in the N810 Internet Tablet, both of which already look quite yummy to the casual onlooker.

The impact of this new partnership with Intel on Nokia's Symbian OS can't be positive, but Nokia is in the habit of flirting around with partners just to try out new technology anyway. Both Intel and Nokia will continue to develop their own technologies, even those that involve competing partners.

ARM still holds the upper hand as they own the development community and the processor technology that's used in almost every mobile phone today. All Intel can do for now is throw money at this relationship and try its best to make it work. In a few years, it might yield some results. µ
