Whatever is funny is subversive, every joke is ultimately a custard pie - George Orwell
THE RECENT Paris Air Show revealed a new range of UAVs, which apparently have been using Linux based operating systems to power missions to blow up mostly women, children and old people in Afghanistan and the tribal lands of Pakistan, and occasionally a few Taliban terrorist camps.
According to Flight Global, a look under the bonnet of a Raytheon surveillance KillerBee UAV revealed that the whole beast was under the control of a heavy fuel engine with a Linux-based computer control system.
Raytheon is offering its KillerBee-4 version to the US military with still more open sauce killer goodness.
Clearly whoever designed the code for the KillerBee-4 had no problem finding the right drivers.
It has some impressive requirements. It can track objects both during the day and after dark by using a system of live video and infrared sensors.
It can also fire precision guided munitions by using an on-board laser for target designation.
Either way, there are going to be parts of Afganistan and Pakistan where GLP is going to listed alongside barber shops and music stores as something never to be seen. µ
My, aren't we clever... Couldn't come up with a better hook than that?
After all this is all Linux is mostly released under GPL.
Can't wait to see what the MAC fanbois will make of this.....
Binwah beat me to it.
typical nick farrell poopookakaa reporting.
no wonder the inquirer is losing all its good reporters and editors with drivel like this.
keep it up nick - soon there'll be no-one left to read your crap and you'll be amongst the job-less millions....
Well... lol. I see that as one reason the author should stop writing articles.
I'm getting really disgusted with the INQ and letting Farrell get away with his poorly written articles. They are not written professionally, and he's turning away long time readers with his poor attitude and point of views.
Very funny, Nick!
I especially liked the bit about the drivers, brilliant.
The other moaners and complainers can go ram themselves and sod off over to read a crappy right-wing neo-con rag like DailyTech.com - the comments there are absolutely full of idiots without a sense of humour! Go Nick, Go....!
Or at least shoot yourself. People are sick of hearing your twisted pouting words. Besides, everyone knows the Taliban hates Linux because it consists of technology greater then the wheel.
Worse than a pox of frogs!
Guns don't kill people...
People kill people...
But it's better to use windows in weapons, like in France air force, where a virus disabled their planes. Maybe windows can bring world-peace after all!!!
Too bad that handguns don't have software as well...
US Military is so girlishly proud over these toys. All girlish F22s, UAVs, Laser toys are effective against rebels and non state groups. Try putting these toys against Pakistan. These US girls were so possessive about UAVs that when PAK threatened to shoot down UAVs they said Ooo no no it will lessen the fun in game.

UAV wreck found, Pakistanis deny shooting
Confirmation of Pakistani forces firing on U.S. troops or aircraft could trigger a crisis in relations between the two countries

The concerns may stem from the 1991 Paris Air Show where the F-117 stealth fighter first appeared. Two years after the show, President Clinton boycotted the Paris Air Show. An industry executive claims that the reason the show was boycotted was because the French government had followed the F-117 with its ultra-low frequency, long-range radar to try to glean secrets from the aircraft during its approach.

every jet aircraft leaves swirls of air—vortices—in its wake. Doppler RADAR, which can image wind velocities, might pinpoint such disturbances if it could be made sufficiently high-resolution.
Other anti-stealth techniques could include the detection of aircraft-caused disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field (magnetic anomaly detection), networks of lowfrequency radio links to detect stealth aircraft by interruptions in transmission, the use of specially shaped RADAR pulses that resist absorption, and netted RADAR. Netted RADAR is the use of more than one receiver, and possibly more than one transmitter, in a network. Since stealth aircraft rely partly on deflecting RADAR pulses, receivers located off the line of pulse transmission might be able to detected deflected echoes. By illuminating a target area using multiple transmitters and linking multiple receivers into a coordinated network, it should be possible to greatly increase one's chances of detecting a stealthy target

On March 27, 1999: The 3rd Battalion of the 250th Missile Brigade, under the command of Colonel Zoltán Dani, equipped with the Isayev S-125 'Neva-M' (NATO designation SA-3 Goa), downed an American F-117 Nighthawk.[27] According to Wesley Clark and other NATO generals, Yugoslav air defenses found they could detect F-117s with "obsolete" Soviet radars operating on long wavelengths. The pilot ejected and was rescued by search and rescue forces near Belgrade. This was the first and so far only time a stealth aircraft was shot down.

Great another reason to love linux..
Linux as the spearpoint in the fight against religious fascism.!!
"to power missions to blow up mostly women, children and old people in Afghanistan and the tribal lands of Pakistan, and occasionally a few Taliban terrorist camps."
Congratulations, Nick! You've written the first INQ article that really disgusts me. The U.S. military has done more to prevent and disrupt terrorist networks that you can ever imagine. And "yes" human beings are in the military so occasionally mistakes will be made. This doesn't lessen the tragedy for those families, but a war is being fought. I am sure that those people would gladly sacrifice their lives if they knew that it would lead to the expulsion of the Taliban from their country. Unfortunately, they receive so much misguided propaganda from the Taliban (AND JOURNALISTS LIKE YOU), that they can't see the truth and ultimate goal.
You and the other liberal journalists should be ashamed.

Imagine a little girl and her mother in a poppy field. Mom is showing her the proper way to strap a bomb to her little girls chest and.. 'What was that noise"....!BAM! !KERPOW!...
Bwa ha ha... ho i gotta stop laughing, my side is hurting..
I need a article on 'Global Warming', oops I am sorry, 'Climate Change' (is the politically correct term now). Its not getting hotter, its getting colder and we have to stop the temperature from changing at all, its America's fault, damn bastards changing the thermostat all the time!
Lets shoot some more babies! American Bastards!
That the effectiveness of the open-source model would eventually result in almost unstoppable killing machines.
Should i reconsider ?
you mean CIA?
Im sure that the computers that will talley the authors death from a terrorist attack will be running some kind of software. If he/she/it wants to retain the right to yammer on like this he /she/it had better hope that those UAVs can do their job and keep the terrorists of balance in their own lairs rather have them spread to his/her/its neighborbood.
As for the dim one talking about 'girlie' this and that, of course these things arent overly capable in a active war situation -- they arent meant to be or are meant to be expendable. When the time comes (possibly) when a big enough attrocity is committed by the barbarians , real weapons like nukes will be used to eradicate them.
What the frak kind of bullshit article is this? Do you know the lengths the military goes through to ensure civilian safety? They take it very, very seriously and comments like the author's may be taken at face value - after all, he is a reporter. As a reporter, he has the responsibility to let the readers know that he is either 1) joking / sardonic 2) a self-hating left-leaning asshole. Take your pic.
Hi
I would just like to say that I come to this site to read this author's interesting articles as he/she says things without any taboo's. So if any of you people do not like the writing style then go to any other usual site where you get the same content though delivered to you so your conscience can be clean that you have read nice news and not horrible "oh it is so unethical but so true" news.
Unique writing, keep it up! ;)
Kthbaai!
"The military goes t great lengths to ensure civilian safety"?!!
That's a laugh. Ever since WW2 and the advent of mass bombing and air superiority every military engagement using a large air force targets primarily civilians. They do this both by dropping bombs and firing missiles directly into civilian areas and at infrastructure necessary for civilian survival like water supply, power stations, hospitals, communications, transportation, etc.
You don't know that? Welcome to 1984 where war is peace and foreign invasion is national defense.
Oh, how horrible, I never really liked the idea of research and development in artillery and military weaponry it is causing unnecessary loss of human life by those American na zees, and of those women and children that Nick mentioned, other than this site here, I would have never known of the like because the mainstream media such as the BBC are run by a bunch of Jews who are trying to conceal the truth
Allow me to tell you the irony of this, an oppressed people that had the Genocide take place on them (holocaust) they are now the ones that are causing some of the greatest of atrocities in the 21st century while they are in power. Being once oppressed I thought they would know how this felt and would not have done so but I suppose their na zee Zionist code of conduct says otherwise. Mankind still has important lessons to learn such as to get over it and stop wasting money on finding ways to destroy innocent human life and practice their elitism and their na zeeism.
There is so many people that are dying, not because of incurable diseases or AIDS and/or HIV, but because of malnourishment and starvation, something as simple as that yet Mans everlasting limitless greed will cause him to buy more cars, go binge drinking, waste money investigating Alien Shet in space and killing his fellow brother in humanity and committing incest etcetera ultimately killing himself (through intoxication of alcohol and smoking). I'd now like to ask the golden question, which disease killed these innocent people struck between a war that they never had a say in, the ones that were mentioned in history books and the ones that were not mentioned in history books?
I tried to comment on this article a few times but it never went through I wonder why? Nick this was a nice article so as for those na-zees that say otherwise they should stick a trident up their ...... but about the women and children part, I never heard that statement before anywhere else other than here, now.
Maybe because the mainstream media such as the BBC are run by J3ws and are concealing the truth, the irony here is that after being rumped up the a$$ themselves by the na zees here now in the 21st century they are the ones causing the greatest suffering according to Russia Today (RT)
It's very simple psychology, it's very similar to a boy who was abused when little, when he grows up he'll inflict a similar abuse to others under his protection (his children) without treatment, like that the J3ws were abused and killed (6 million) and now their taking it out on innocent people that never had a say in anything and were caught up in a war that they never started! (slams desk then drinks some diet coke to calm down)
I think this RnD in military weaponry is a waste of time and money like binge drinking, looking for alien shi't in space and many others especially when there are people dying not because of complex diseases such as AIDS or HIV and some cancers, but because of starvation and malnourishment, but this is not the concern of those higher-ups AKA na zees in a guise.
I salute Obama because of his speech and balanced view (what a rarity, America has got a bad habit/history of electing na zees like Bush and his racist dad, but I'm glad they made amends) but I must say he has got his work cut out for him because I don't think those J3&ish na zees are willing to comply.
