THE NEXT ANDROID HANDSET from T-Mobile will be called the G1 Touch, according to a tweet from the UK division.
T-Mobile US launched the first ever Google OS powered phone. But when the INQ came a-calling they weren't even aware that the product name had been made public yet.
Normally the US and UK have the same handsets, rolled out to shops with predicable lag in the UK. But the US T-Mobilees say the UK division is run separately, so the name of a handset could differ to the US. They also hinted there might be two materially different handsets for the US and UK.
That's odd, we think, because the original G1 was known by the same name on both sides of the pond.
So who will make the device? The UK division has nothing to say beyond the tweet.
All the Google OS handsets released so far have been made by HTC, but HTC is remaining tight-lipped.
Another likely contender would be Huawei, who announced their U8230 Android phone recently.
The Vodafone Magic Android handset carried the HTC brand name. The T-Mobile G1 did not, because T-Mobile was heavily involved in the G1 design, specifying a Sidekick look-alike.
Perhaps, the next Google OS phone for T-Mobile USA could be a “magical” one? µ
Google really blew this. I've been looking at new phone on and off the last year, and finally went with a Blackberry as I'd used one before. Really wanted to like the Touch Pro when I got it, but the touch was just off.
My biggest wish was to get the Android, however only T-Mobile had one, and their coverage sucks here in the US.
Don't see why Google didn't cut a deal with Verizon to counter Apple's tie-in with AT&T. I definately like the G1, even with the weird swing down and out action. The GUI/OS and display seemed excellent.
With the Iphone 3G at $99, and a chance that AT&T may lower or customize some plans more reasonably, not sure if Android will get the chance to go very far in the future.
I wouldn't really say they leaked it, they announced it via Twitter :p
Google gave away 4000 HTC Magic phones at Google IO this year, it's an excellent handset and perhaps will be one that's released this year as well.
The Google IO phone, called the "Ion" is unlocked and will work on most networks.
Isn't it common knowledge that the next T-Mobile USA handset will be the HTC Magic re-branded as the 'TMobile MyTouch'?
Also for years Tmobile USA (formerly Voicestream) has always been the last to get new handsets.

"T-Mobile will release a smartphone running Google’s Android operating system in Europe in the late third quarter, the phone’s Chinese manufacturer, Huawei Technologies, said Thursday."
