Apple's glossy screens may cause injury

Shiny happy people at risk
Wed Jun 17 2009, 10:03

APPLE'S HIGH GLOSS SCREENS are apparently a health hazard for the shiny happy people who stare at them for too long.

Boffins at Queensland's University of Technology have told Mac users, on its Health and Safety website, that Apple glass or high gloss monitor screens could cause health problems.

It says that reflections and glare on high gloss monitor screens and their relation to the angle of the monitor screen, could cause the operator to adopt awkward postures when viewing the monitor screen and using related equipment.

These awkward postures might cause health injuries.  We find that Mac fanbois objecting to stories that do not say wonderful things about their toys tend to adopt awkward postures so perhaps this is due to a reflective screen.

Reflections on the screen can be from internal and external sources such as overhead lighting or the position of windows, the site warns.

It says that Mac users should close their blinds or window shades and place the glossy displays at a 90 degree angle to any overhead lighting to minimise glare and reflection.

To make matters worse for Apple it says that students and faculty should not buy products with glossy displays.

Apple started using glossy displays as an option on its high-end Macbook Pros a few years ago and they are standard on the aluminium Macs. µ

Shine tarnishes Mac

When at last I could afford an iMac, I took a leap away from Windows, without checking out the Apple gloss issue. Part of my work is editing soundtrack traces. What a headache, against the backdrop of daylight, my face, keyboard etc. Tell me, Mr Jobs, am I to work all day in the dark? I get less stress using old pc, screen half the size, and insane OS.

The above comments on this blog follow web statistics

The comments in this article are incredibly interesting because of the percentage spread. I calculated, out of 19 comments, there were 15 relevant comments. Out of these 15, 8 were either neutral or in favor of glossy, while 7 where specifically in favor of matte. That's 53% glossy / 46$ matte. That is roughly exactly the same percentage spread of a recent poll conducted at MacRumors.com - you can see a review of about a dozen online polls at http://macmatte.wordpress.com - where it shows that, on average, across several online polls, about 40% of people prefer matte, with about 20% not wanting to actually buy matte-screen computers.

Warning!

Researchers have recently discovered that birth is the leading cause of death.

Thats right, I said it.
Being born can kill you.

PS: Not a mac owner.

@Mark

If the site has been worthless for a long time, what are you still doing here?

Knob

Nick is a knob. He's upset that he can't afford a Mac. The days of this being a worthwhile site to read are long gone thanks to the uselessness and biased behavior of people who don't know how to run a useful tech blog.

The INQ's other hatebois?

I know Charlie's the nVidia hateboi, and Nick's the Apple hateboi.

Are there any others, excluding of course former INQ readers who are now INQ hatebois because of the crap that the INQ now considers to be journalism?

Editorial Policy of Inq

...is clearly nothing more than to encourage weak 'journalists' to write flagrantly biased articles.

This makes all Inq's articles (including the seldom found good ones) worth less.

Nick - apple glossy screen. Any manufacturer's glossy screen. They are all glossy screens.

This is not a story about apple - it's another counter-productive post from someone who is making the Inq progressively worse every day, because they have a transparent agenda wildly at odds with balanced reporting.

Stop making your points of view so worthless. I won't claim I'll stop reading the Inq tomorrow if you don't, but I will say I spend a tenth of the time I used to reading the Inq, and even less on the comments you have cultivated to be troll + flame pointlessness.

You, Mr Farrell, are yet barely half the wanker your useless editor is training you to be.

come on

If anyone really wants to have a non glossy screen. There are anti glare films you can buy and stick on the your screen.
I have one of these, not that expensive and really does what it's supposed to.

Of course it would be better if they would offer an option for anti glare but it isn't like that's a no go. You can add an anti glare film just like you can add more memory.

Glossy screens are bad for your eyes

Leaving off the antiglare filter may look pretty and save a few pennies but Jobs deserves a good whack upside the head from an optometrist. Eye strain bad.

So does HP for their uber-glossy Brightview Infinity screens.

Injuries???

A high-gloss screen can cause injuries???
B.S.
They should maybe tackle the Porn industry. You can get injuries from being in all those position or from worse.
Maybe even go after all computer companies and hardware companies for giving people Carpal-Tunnel.
What I think this is all about is a giant pissing contest because Apple has always had an edge over Microshaft and other companies and no one can stand the hype.

shurley the point has been missed...

Aren't we all missing the point here? Why do we need glossy screens? I can't think of an advantage over a matt screen, can you? In fact I'd never buy anything with a shiny screen. I think the only reason they exists is to attract people who like shiny things.

Yes....

...well clearly, it's Ok to have a glossy screen on my other laptops, then. Guess I'm safe - the only mac I own is a Mac Mini, so it looks like I've avoided the apparently perilous Mac-only glossy screen disaster befalling so many macolytes these days.

It's OK, we're immune.

Because glossy screens on all other laptops are not reflective!

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
