SEARCH OUTFIT Google has worked out a way of syncing its online applications with Microsoft's Outlook email client.
The move continues Google's push into the Vole's turf by effectively turning its own software against it.
Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook means that web-based applications offerred by Google will work with its rival's email, contacts, and calendars.
Google engineer Eric Orth wrote in his bog that the move will remove a key barrier to enterprise adoption of Google Apps.
The search outfit has already enabled people to use its Gmail service offline and made its 'cloud' based software interoperable with Blackberry smartphones.
Google Apps Sync for Outlook is being flogged for $50 per year per business user, although Google is providing the software to education or nonprofit groups at no charge.
In some ways the syncing software might be viewed as an admission by Google that it has so far failed to convince business customers to switch away from Microsoft's products.
Orth wrote that many business users prefer Gmail's interface and features to products they've used in the past. But there are people who just love Outlook and this is why Google is offering software to sync with it. µ
What have you been smoking Gmail costs about 50$ per user every year. If your business has 20 users that 1000$ right there. And Google calendar is just horrible.
I can just see it now. Business think they saved a few $$ on switching to Gmail but at the cost of increased customer support and decrease productivity because gmail does not come close to exchange calendar.
Like I said before gmail is good for personal use and most people dont use Outlook for their personal email.
Assuming Exchange does have outages (our email goes down maybe twice per year), the company knows who is responsible, will find out the reason, and can easily punish carelessness if it is warranted.
If they choose to trust Google, then they know which company is responsible, will likely never know the reason, and have no means of reprisal.
Given that losing email can cause work to grind to a halt, I don't see how a company could reasonably be expected to choose Google over Exchange.
Gmail is free, don't forget this. It's internet based so is accessible anywhere, no need for outlook remote access etc.
Gmail wins for low cost, ease of use and flexibility.
Gmail doesn't need any tech guys to support it.
Gmail doesn't cost money.
People are used to Outlook, if Gmail works in Outlook then that's many of the boxes ticked.
No developer would trust his corporates exchange server with any useful information. That's what we use our personal iphones for. Exchange is going down fool. Count those numbers... the developers are leaving

If your corporate exchange servers just die then its most likely a hardware issue, network issue, third party junk or you need better admins. Exchange/Outlook is a rock don't confuse that with a pretty gui with a few neat tricks.
No company in their right mind should trust their data on someone elses internet accessible servers.

"All of those times when the corporate exchagne servers just die" ?
Your silly, PC's don't die, you must simply be used to using Macintosh hardware.
I do like the fact that this is big news. Other messaging vendors have been doing this for years.
What is news is that it has taken Google so long to do it and that their offering is way behind the competition in terms of features. Shared Calendars? Shared Mailboxes? Task? Notes? Nope.
Google is trying to make gmail more like exchange server. First it was Active sync licence and now its Outlook support. Wouldn't it be easier for them to just replace gmail with Exchange. It will save them time and money and it will also save users the frustration of using a hacky product which just wont come close to what exchange offers.
What dumb ass CEO would think of going for gmail which is a exchange wannabe versus using the real deal. Sorry I just dont see it happening. I have a gmail account for personal email use (thats all its good for) but I would hate it if my employer switched my corporate account from exchange to gmail.
What about all of those times when the corporate exchange servers just die with no reason, or grind to a halt?
A few in a couple of years is hardly "Continued"
Is google bashing the new black? Bet MS are relieve.
Im sorry, but Exchange / windows mobile still work the best, and with gmails continued outages it will take years (maybe even never) before businesses will adopt it as their sole email system. If only because for SBS at least, exchange is bundled with the software, and activesync is FREE
do consumers really need ANOTHER reason NOT to use outlook?
not really creative of you now is it google?
