Russians probe Microsoft
THE RUSSIANS have decided that Microsoft's restrictions on the supply of Windows XP might be grounds for anti-trust enforcement action.
According to CNET, regulators are apparently claiming that limiting Windows XP supplies and forcing punters to buy Vista instead are against Russian law.
The Vole has largely stopped selling Windows XP for use on new computers, although it still flogs it in some emerging markets as well as for low cost machines, such as netbooks.
Lately Russia has started to criticise Microsoft. In April it said it was looking into whether the company deserved investigation under its antitrust laws.
It strikes us that after all that Microsoft has done to abuse its near-monopoly, the Russians should be able to find something a bit stronger to complain about than that the Vole isn't making available enough copies of its obsolescent operating system. µ

Get over it! XP is on it's way out the door... You can't hardly find a new system that comes with it reinstalled anymore.
Yes. Vista blows chunks, But 7 is almost here and from what I'm seeing is a vast improvement over it's predecessors, XP included.
Sooo... Wait for it, or buy your new machine now install the Win7-rc on it and enjoy.
Perhaps MS has simply failed to pay off the right oficials.
Or, like everyone else in the world, the Russkis are pissed off that when you order XP you pay more and get Vista pre-installed. Then have to waste an hour or so removing Vista before you can use your hardware.
Ostensibly, they plan to investigate Microsoft charging different prices to different retailers and for allegedly different versions at various price levels when in fact they are virtually identical.
Whatever, if it's Microsoft you know they deserve it.
Microsoft has been bullying the whole world for years with pricing, limiting availability of XP, always pushing proprietary protocols and actively preventing interoperability. The only comparison is the Oil Cartels.
We all know oil is on the way out - don't know how long it will take but it will happen. The same should happen to Microsoft - the alternatives are getting stronger every day.
If the Russians want back some of the money Microsoft has sucked from their country then good on them - Microsoft deserves everything it gets.

So to follow that analogy, they've said the OS is good too many times when it wasn't.
Now that it is good people don't believe them?

no version of windows is 'good' they are just "necessary evils" because you need the accursed o/s to run your software: be it games/corporate/business/education.
the viable alternatives are too few atm.
Gadzooks! Call the courts! Book time with them! We cannot find a product made almost a decade ago on our store shelves! All we can find is its newer replacement! Oh noes! Sue sue sue!

Both very similar os's in many ways, yet 7 is a vast improvement. Polish much?
