Fox upset about Bing

Says Microsoft peddles smut
Tue Jun 02 2009, 19:46

US RIGHT-WING PROPAGANDA TV network Fox News (sic) has its knickers twisted about Microsoft's new search engine, Bing.

It claims that the Vole's latest search engine makes it all too easy to view hardcore porn videos without even leaving the search engine.

What has got Fox upset is that Bing has an "autoplay" feature that lets users preview videos simply by hovering the mouse over them.

This means that the video will play without punters having to make the effort to visit the hardcore porn website and possibly undergo age screening procedures.

Fox moans that children and all good Reich-wing Christian Republicans who get upset at the thought of adult entertainment need to be protected from this sort of thing.

It claims that a lot of "family-oriented" pressure groups are demanding that search engines tighten up their censorship so that Republicans and children will have to present their credit card details before they get to see anything that might be salacious. µ

I doubt if bing/microsoft intended any harm

Microsoft has a tendency of releasing things before they are tested out fully. Look at there operating systems for instance. Many applications weren't compatible with vista and Microsoft didn't mention the requirements involved for software developers.

why so upset

Why so much sarcasm?

It should not be so easy for children to view this type of content, and there should be more of a deterrent (such as having to go through the age verification).

Stupid parents and other generic morons of society.

Stop whining about what some company is doing on the internet...you know more advanced search tools are being created every day to entice ANYONE to view whatever content they wish. Learn to use your computers and begin screening your browsers to block whatever content you do not want your children to see.
Microsoft paid alot of people to incorporate content filters into their browser for when things like this come up. It seems that people seem to know how to teak thier computers to try and make it run faster, but have no idea how to set security measures on thier own machine. It is not a hard thing to do at all. It is in the help file in your own computers, but apparently, no one knows how to get there either. I'm frightened to see that the whole "independent thought" thing hasn't caught on yet. Come on people, use your heads for once!! Have a good day.

@me

Quote "...I don't want to see it..."

So, why did you turn off the filter and why did you go and look?

You are of course a hypocrite.

You are one of those types who spend their life trawling for stuff to complain about.

My experience of being a parent is that if you shield your kids too much from the harsh reality of real life, they crave the searching for the bad stuff even more.

Many of the other parents at the local school, don't let their kids use a computer unsupervised even at the age of 10, they don't let them watch TV at certain times, they don't let them out of their site when playing in the backyard.

My experience of their kids: Immature, unbalanced, insecure, socially inept.
and ignorant of the world.

The fact that the website has a filter on it that you have to actually turn off to get the bad stuff is enough.

This rather like those people who complain about TV programs, if you don't like it, don't watch it, but don't think for one minute you have the god given right to tell everyone else what they can and can't see. Because to do that means you had to go and look for it and watch it first, and since when did you have the authority to do that?

If you think you're better than everyone else and can make these judgements, then you are in for a suprise.

Oh and of course "being very left wing..." or "being very right wing..." for that matter immediately implies that you have a severely unbalanced opinion, which was clearly demonstrated by the rest of your "speech".

"Very left wing" gave us Russia, China and other various human rights issues, "being very right wing.." gave us Hitler and Mussolini, none which proved to be very healthy for personal freedoms and free speech.

You shot yourself down in the headline.

I don't want my kids seeing the type of thing you watched and searched for, but I know they won't even bother to go and find it, they know it exists, but they aren't interested, because I bring them up properly.

So, what is the cutoff age where you will stop hovering over your child whislt they drink from the heavy firehose that is the interwebs? Cell phone in the latrine at 14, you'll be there to intercept that browse? At the library after school? No visiting friends houses who may have subscribed to this global network of horror? Clear glass bedroom doors, mate? Okie dokie.

Funny how the world works...

Indeed Christians and Muslims have a lot in common, the one group have their heads stuck up a pigs ass and the latter have their heads stuck up their own ass.
There shouldn't be anything wrong with Bing, but rather how it's used. MS is trying to introduce a new kind of technology to make browsing the net more fun and productive.
I don't think that the Fox network have any Nazi propaganda that they wanna push, just merely pointing out a obvious flaw.

I actually love Fox news

If it wasn't for Fox news, The daily show would have a lot more problems in coming up with ridiculous news statements to make fun off.
Besides that.. There would not be so many funny clips on You tube where thinking people hammer FOX news anchors for their narrow minded circle reasoning skills..

The vitriolic news diarrhoea coming from fox thus helps to put regular life in a more shiny context.
Besides that it is important to hear what is fermenting in the uneducated fairytale loving underbelly of society.

hmmm (part 2)

By the way, I always thought that hover-over preview feature would've been a good implementation into gnome since it already does it for audio files and uses a snapshot of the middle of a video file as the video's icon. I guess the gnome developers couldn't put 2 and 2 together and it took microsoft to see the obvious. Makes me mad....

Halfway through the article I was thinking that Fox was angry because Bing's free porn service was cutting into Fox's own hordes of pay porn sites. It even sounds like a more likely reason than that "save the children" nonsence.

Take responsibility, instead of forcing your morals on everyone else

Hey Here's a couple great Ideas!

- If you dont like what Bing does, don't use it!

- Monitor how your kids use the internet, use net-nanny or similar softwares if you're too lazy to responsibly monitor what your kids are doing online.

- Stop promoting the insane idea that somehow morals and decency are things created by religion, that you must have faith to have morals. Morals and decency are nothing more than tribal survival mechanisms that were favoured by natural selection. Atheists generally have better morals anyways ... we treat people better without the need to imagine a superior being that will punish or reward us for our actions.

Keep your twisted religious beliefs in your own house, in your own church, in your own imagination. You've got no business telling others how your imaginary god thinks we should live our lives ... and no business complaining that no one should have access to services like Bing because of the chance they might use it in ways that you find offensive.

I think the religitards are just scared that with Bing, their priests will have yet another way to shame their churches and congregations.

Fox is Overreacting

According to the article, Fox is upset that punters will be able to watch porn without having to make the effort to visit the hardcore porn website and possibly undergo age screening procedures. Well, so what? On one hand, if the porn site has no age screening, clicking on a link to see a video isn't any harder than hovering over a pornographic image. On the other hand, if a video is protected by an age check, how was the Bing search engine able to pass an age check and index the video?

If Fox wants to protect kids from porn, they'd be better off complaining about age checks. When age checks are present, they are typically little more than clicking on button labeled "I promise I am 18".

What do you expect?

Honestly, what do you expect if you turn off filtering? If anything, it should be incredibly easy to integrate Net Nanny-like policies into the search engine to prevent such content from being displayed. Does he also complain so loudly about unfiltered Google Images? It does the same kind of thing.

And to the posters who think Christians are the enemy, Christianity is simply one beggar telling another beggar where to find food. If you don't want the gift, a simple No totally suffices. This is an English publication(The enquirer) and, last I checked, most English speakers live in free countries. So, if the laws seem to favor Christianity more than other religions, that's just a symptom(good or bad) of the society.

OK, I can totally understand FOX’s response. They employ a lot of people and intelligence is not always prerequisite for types of role that they originally were hired to perform. At some point they loose their looks and get promoted, before we know it they start entertaining us with their moral concerns.

On the other hand this comment is priceless:

Just Goes to Show

Our Reich-wing Republicans have turned their hatred of big government into something of a fetish. We are told over, and over, and over again that government interference in our lives is tantamount to a communist conspiracy. Incidences like Bing exposes them for what they really are, greedy manipulative oligarchs that want to be able to steal, embezzle, rape pillage and plunder the hard work of the day laborer, hourly wage worker and fixed income retirees. This sort of "freedom" is exactly what pit us in the current economic crisis! But boy oh boy when they want to impose their wacky, narrow-minded and often bigoted "morals" on the rest of us, suddenly government is the Savior (at least until sweet Jesus returns). No government regulation of private, consensual behavior is too extreme, restrictive or onerous. So it appears that Big Government is only bad when it puts a cop oh their corner to make sure they don't steal. Otherwise, government offers the perfect tool to "bring the rest of us sinners to Jesus." Ughhh!!!

Software is neutral. If parents are worried about their kiddies seeing bits and bobs, or reading about evolution, or learning that the world is more than 6,000 years old, then it is their responsibility. They have no right to limit the lawful behavior of other adults.

@me is a fine example of this approach. He says he doesn't want to get porn returned in his searches, but what does he do? He turns off all filtering and then enters search terms guaranteed to turn up such porn. It's like the old argument over censoring Cable and Broadcast TV. If you don't want to see it, then don't search it out. If you don';t want your kids to see it, then supervise them, don't just park them in front of a tv or computer and use that as a baby sitter.

Ny the way "me," downloading and perusing child porn is a federal felony. There is no research exception. You have Bush 43 and the repubs to thank for this law. They use to come on my TV when I was watching Survivor: Ground Zero. They always shouted "What are we going to do about Saddam?" They are always sadamn mad about poor people, and claiming their self-righteous right to the Lost and Found and everything under the sun. They are seditious instigators jealously undermining liberty, and seeding firearms. Near every intrigue of both the last and present century bear their arms. They might only be surpassed by Labour.

Thank Temperance, that their time slot was taken over by Supernatural on the CW.

But I can't rest easy from the white snakes and tiny brown men with their arrows and bows which have no ankle bite. Cardiff has said the rift will be back in full swing on Torchwood this Summer. Murdock or no.

I like the fact that the greedy sex pedlars are actually preaching that sin isn't free. A classic self-defeating self-accusatory act. I would have thought they would have pleaded the fifth!

In this, I would rather neutralize the issue by using "Dirt is Cheap" and "You are what you watch"!

Meanwhile, I may get my green wish just watching the porn system crash, then after a while people will get tired of looking at the smutty oldies and the net will be more virtually clean in the end.

Yahoo already has a viewing process where you dont first have to go to the site, bypassing any age filters. But again you need to turn the filter off first to get the content in the first place. The filter can also be protected to make it stay on safe mode if you wish.

You're very naive to believe a child wont be able to access porn if they want to. And Fox thinking they can censor the web is a ridiculous notion
