Microsoft saves power with its server chips
WHILE THE WORLD PLUS DOG talks about green power saving in data centres, Microsoft is trying to get enough grunt out of lower powered chips.
Volish enginer Dileep Bhandarkar told EE Times that punters want data centre power usage cut and this is causing headaches for system designers.
Bhandarkar said that the Vole has been removing unnecessary components and using high-efficiency voltage regulator modules and power supplies.
The answer seems to be to use low-power processors in the Vole's standard servers. Apparently you can save 20 watts per processor if you are willing to sacrifice five percent in terms of CPU clock frequency at the same price.
He said that if servers are not heavily used then the resulting two to three percent decrease in performance isn't missed. He said that replacing four-socket servers with two-socket servers and using single-socket systems in place of two-socket systems are pretty neat ideas too. µ

I thought MS is responsible for virtual improvements on the software front. However, the chip manufacturers and board designers have to implement the necessary features to make data centers running for efficiently. And they do. The data center topics are not new and everyone in that area is struggling with this problem since at least 2 years.
