Swedish pirate party tipped for EU win

The backlash has begun
Monday, 1 June 2009, 14:52

THE SWEDISH Pirate Party has been favoured to win at least one seat in the European parliament this week.

The party, which wants to bolster Internet privacy, was founded in January 2006 and has been getting a lot of support from those who think that the music and film industries have gone too far in trying to control people's lives.

According to AFP, membership shot up after a Stockholm court on April 17 sentenced four Swedes to a year in jail for running one of the world's biggest filesharing sites, The Pirate Bay.

Opinion polls show the party with between 5.5 and 7.9 percent of votes, well above the four percent required to win a seat.

The Swedish press has pointed out that the traditional parties have been asleep on the issue and ignored how much support the party has gained, particularly among the young.

Since the rest of the Swedes are unlikely to go to the polls it is the perfect opportunity for an election sensation and a chance for the younger generation to give the entertainment industry a swift kick in the nadgers. µ

Not just Sweden

The German Pirate Party is also running in the EU elections.

If you don't live in Germany or Sweden, you can still support your local pirate party, you can find your local party at http://pp-international.net

You have a Canadian supporter TPB. Hope you win a seat and lets show the world that Democracy can still work, even tho the term doesn't mean the same as it did years ago.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul?

What about poor old Mary whom works for Peter and gets screwed over by Peter in the process? Peter is like a parasite whom leeches off Mary for everything they can get. Mary has no option but to go to independent John, if they are to ever get a fair deal.

I didn't know Paul was receiving any money from Peter, that's news to me. More like Peter is more interested in taking more money from Mary and Paul. When they should be reforming there old outdated business model that doesn't fit into a modern world.

It is also worth noting, how funny it is that Peter always blames Paul, when Paul is down and out. I guess court victories are guaranteed in most cases, when the victim is defenseless.

Cowardly conservative Peter deserves all the bad karma they are now receiving. BTW, Peter should be called Scrooge :)

How long before they become Corrupt

anyone takeing odds on how long it will take the Pirate Party to become corrurted like the rest of the politicans? Every first timer enters the system with the best of intensions, but once the money starts waveing they end up corrupted like everyone else

The more corrupt the better!

Ideally they should claim Piratebay as their homepage and claim expenses for the cost of running it.

They should definitely try fund a guerrilla war somewhere in the third world too!

The more the better

This is exactly what is needed for the rest of the World . Especially the North Americas. Being from Canada I can only hope and pray that we will wake from our SLUMBER one day and elect a party of our own who caters to Normal common folks like us. Who would of ever thought a country like Sweden would show the rest of the globe how do things ? :)
GO SWEDEN GO

Get your priorities straight.

So 5-7% of the population of Sweden thinks internet piracy is the most important political topic atm. That´s scary.
So what about unemployment?
PP - We only care about file sharing.
And the environment?
PP - We only care about file sharing.
What about fleece shirts?
PP - Mmm.. fleece shirts, we like! We could share them.. fleece sharing.

More than file-sharing

"So 5-7% of the population of Sweden thinks internet piracy is the most important political topic atm."

It's not only about Internet piracy, it's about anonymity on the Internet. A couple of laws has been established which effect people's privacy on the Internet. The FRA law for example which make it legal for the state to "open and read" _all_ e-mails and check them for "bad" content if they pass country borders, which most e-mails do. IPRED which let private companies demand owners of ip-adresses from ISP:s without any court order if they think that anyone has copied anything. I think letting private companies doing police work is wrong. I don't know what you think about it...

A few corrections and elaborations

Just to clarify, Piratpartiet (The Pirate Party) and The Pirate Bay are two separate entities, although they both have origins in the Piratbyrån (Pirate Bureau), a thinktank opposing the Anti-piratbyrån (Anti-pirate bureau).

The main issue (out of a href="http://www.piratpartiet.se/international/english" the three areas of interest /a wasn't filesharing but the civil rights online, where not only had laws been adopted that allowed total wiretapping of communications online without reasonable suspicion of criminal activities, private corporations given more power than the law enforcement but also plans to turn the internet into some kind of cable TV subscription, where you only were given access to specific sites. All in all, too much to take, especially since the current goverment parties specifically stated that they would *not* take such actions if they were given the vote of confidence.
