PC hardware 'market resistant'

At least in some areas
Mon Jun 01 2009, 12:42

WHILE PC MAKERS have been sobbing into their beers lately, an analyst has come out with the unusual comment that the industry is recession-proof.

Beancounters at JPR claim that PC makers are on track to beat builders of consoles thanks to their higher resilience.

Apparently since users can't be arsed shelling out cash on consoles which are really a one hit wonder, PC sales are staying stable because punters can do more with them.

Buying a PC for gaming makes sense as the hardware can be shared, since the machine can be used for watching and making videos, as well as for office work and web browsing, something consoles can't do, the outfit claims

"PC gaming systems seem to have suffered the least discounting as a result of the recession, which illustrates the value consumers place on such systems," JPR said in a statement.

Game playing PC market sales reached $20.07 billion in 2008, JPR found. The firm expects sales to decline only seven per cent to $18.66 billion in 2009. Sad, but not as bad as the rest of the industry. µ

hmmm

When you lose your job and can't afford next month's rent, buying a new pc is the last thing on your mind. I guess that certain businesses will continue to upgrade and expand, but I doubt that'll make much difference to the hardware market. In the short term, the market may remain stable with shifts in consumer demands, but as the economy keeps going down the crapper, I don't see how pc hardware could possibly be 'market resistant'.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
