Comcast to upgrade to 100Mb service
A LITTLE BIRD singing on a box on the telephone pole outside my window is saying some interesting things. The box it is sitting on says "Comcast", and the bird is chirping away about an imminent upgrade to 100Mb service.
Previously, all you could get is 50/20Mb service, locally here in Minneapolis, MN it costs $189/month. The bird says that any day now, Comcast will double that to close to 100 by a likely 40Mb, but the cost is unknown. Given Comcast's deep respect for its users, and openess about its practices, a first born is likely the entry price.
In any case, look for it soon, things are getting much closer to 'fast enough' every day. Now if they could only get cheaper, and the DPI folk strung up, life would be good. The bird laughed when I mentioned that, I didn't know they could. µ

60mbits : 40euro. Amsterdam. that's around $60? You guys get ripped off. I wouldn't want to pay more than 20euro for the 120mbit connections they have here tbh.
Ripped off? I guess thats one of the perks of population density. The US lags in broadband.
Early adopters in the US always get taxed, even if it isn't so early when compared to other countries.
Apples to oranges. The Netherlands is a small, densely populated country with an already established infrastructure due to the major submarine cables that are connected there from North America. It's resulted in lots of competition from operators that don't need to invest in infrastructure building (unlike Comcast), meaning prices stay down for good bandwidth.
This isn't to say that Dutch broadband policy hasn't also helped with things, but the country has a very unique situation that they've properly exploited.
I called Comcast on this a month or so ago to get the upgrade. They confirmed that it was available in my area for a little while, as well as most places... BUT, if you decided to switch to it, there wasn't a package deal (so you would break your own) AND there weren't enough DOCSIS 3 modems available to meet the demand.
I was told that they would call me when the modems came in IF I upgraded to the new speed first. SO, I would be paying a higher amount for a product that I wouldn't have for an indefinite amount of time.

Charlie, are you from Minneapolis? I am in Brooklyn Park,MN and I finally get 6Mb service from comcast(they say it's 12Mb, but it averages 5.8Mb always).

The more people who have a faster internet connections, the better. Maybe then I will see less latency in some of my online games :P
I have Comcast here in Minneapolis and my speed is 50 down / 10 up. They provided a nice Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 modem that has a Gigabit ethernet card as well.
I haven't seen the 100 Mb upgrade yet!
Id rather have my 10mb connection with no download limit then a 100mb connection with a limit of 100gb a month. I can eat up 100gb in a little over a week on my 10mb connection now

Comcast 100mb service will be available for business services only not residential services price around $300.00-$350.00 (From Comcast Business Sales REP).Residential services only available is the 50mb download/10mb upload with download and upload Cap.Residential services break cap service warning first then internet will be banned. Our company provides IT services to Twin Cities companies, so we do a lot of work with Comcast on behalf of our customers. One of our sales contacts got us setup on the 100/15 package as a "beta tester", so we're getting double the download speeds at the same price at the 50/10 - until the beta is over later this year. The installer sent us to http://twincities.speedtest.comcast.net/speedtest/ to test it out, but it maxes out at 50MB. Guess there's no way we can prove if we really have it not not...
