India's PC market picked up slightly in Q1

Still off from last year

PC SHIPMENTS in India tipped up 7.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2009 from the last quarter of 2008, market tracker IDC reported today.

A total of 1.68 million PCs were shipped to India outlets in Q1, up from 1.56 million in the prior quarter.

"This is [a] small indication that the market has bottomed out," said Kapil Dev Singh, IDC India country manager.

Unit shipments were still down 19 per cent in the first quarter from the same period last year, however. More than 2 million PCs were shipped in Q1 of 2008.

Singh said his firm expects the rest of this year to be challenging for the Indian PC market, with growth remaining either flat or negative year over year. µ

1st quarter (Q1) sales in India is typically more than 25-30% then the last quarter (Q4, owing to financial year end. And hence a increase in sales by a merely 7-8% in Q1 doesn't indicate anything, and hence the the story heading and the inference impled thereby is incorrect.
